Shell launches Powershop programme to support five township and rural auto businesses in Western Cape — applications open until 4 Sept 2026

Five selected businesses will receive container-based enterprise units, access to Shell lubricants, promotional materials and business support aimed at helping them expand their operations and strengthen their presence in their local markets.

The programme is targeting automotive entrepreneurs looking to grow their businesses, particularly those operating in township and rural areas.

Opportunity for automotive entrepreneurs

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, be South African citizens residing in South Africa and have previous entrepreneurial experience.

They must also be based in a township or rural area and have approved access to land or a suitable site where the container unit can be installed.

Ngqiqo Mahlutshana, channel development manager for Route-to-Market at Shell Downstream South Africa, said the programme is intended to create opportunities for emerging entrepreneurs to participate in the lubricants sector.

“The Shell Lubricants Powershop Programme working alongside the Shell LiveWIRE Programme is aimed at driving inclusivity within the lubricants sector while creating opportunities for emerging entrepreneurs to become part of the Shell Lubricants network,” said Mahlutshana.

The programme provides selected businesses with access to Shell products and marketing support, while the enterprise units are intended to help entrepreneurs establish a more visible retail presence.

Shell said the programme forms part of its broader entrepreneurship initiatives and is focused on supporting business development within the automotive sector.

Applications open

Applications are open to qualifying mechanics, motor body repairers and auto-spares retailers across the Western Cape.

Mahlutshana said stronger small businesses can have a wider economic impact through job creation and supporting local livelihoods.

“The success of local businesses has a ripple effect that extends well beyond the enterprise itself. Stronger businesses can contribute to thriving communities, support livelihoods and inspire future entrepreneurs,” he said.

Applications close on 4 September 2026.

Eligible entrepreneurs can apply through the Shell Powershop Programme.
