WineLand Media Celebrates 2026 30 Under 30 Class at Bacco Estate

The future of South African wine was on full display at Bacco Estate in Paarl as WineLand Media, together with sponsors ROTOCON and auric barrels, celebrated the 2026 class of the industry’s rising stars.

Now in its annual format, the 30 Under 30 initiative recognises talented young professionals who are already making their mark across the wine value chain. From viticulture and winemaking to marketing, hospitality, sales and wine tourism, the programme shines a spotlight on the next generation of leaders helping to change the future of South African wine.

This year’s 30 Under 30 ambassadors, featured in the June 2026 issue of WineLand, are:

Bradwin Lester | Dayton Charles | Elani Nell | Esterina Fourie | George Mandefu | Helene Joubert | Hugo Pietersen | Jean Botha | Jennifer Keenan | Johannah Shibe Moloantoa | Julia du Preez | Lanél Smith | Leandri Bosman | Louwrens Johannes Laing | Lucilia Ramos | Luhan Steyn | Matthew Grant | Mila Malherbe | Mosima Mabelebele | Moteku Mawela | Nicole Pelzer | Rein Ernst | Rudi Johns Smith | Sarah Coppings | Shannon Jacobs | Simon Terblanche | Stephanie Joubert | Terry-Ann Joan Klink | Tristan Maske | Wesley Soule.

“The wine industry is evolving rapidly, and what gives me confidence about the future is the calibre of people entering it,” says Wanda Augustyn, Editor of WineLand Media. “This group represents far more than individual achievement. They represent curiosity, innovation, resilience and a willingness to challenge the status quo. They are building careers, but they are also helping to build a stronger, more diverse and more relevant South African wine industry.”

The event also highlighted the importance of investing in future talent. Long-standing industry partner ROTOCON once again reaffirmed its commitment to developing young professionals and used the occasion to announce the winner of its annual label design competition, Mpilo Mthembu.

“You are the generation standing between tradition and possibility and have the opportunity to leave things better than you found them,” said Michael Aengenvoort, CEO of ROTOCON. “Congratulations on being here, and keep working hard to build something worth inheriting.”

Co-sponsor auric barrels, represented by Birgit Davies, echoed the importance of nurturing the next generation of industry leaders. “This generation feels different – not necessarily louder or more rebellious, but perhaps more aware,” she said. “I think that might be exactly what the industry needs: no perfection, but openness.”

One of the highlights of the afternoon was the announcement of the 2026 Luminary Award recipient. Presented annually to an individual whose influence extends beyond their immediate role, the award recognises leadership, vision and a meaningful contribution to the broader wine community.

This year’s Luminary Award was presented to wine curator, storyteller and community builder Tristan Maske. Through initiatives such as The Wine Intern, Lekker Doos, The Platform South Africa and Ex Animo Wine Co., Tristan has become an advocate for South African wine and a connector of people. His work focuses on making wine more accessible, inclusive, and relevant to a new generation of consumers.

“Tristan understands that wine is about more than what’s in the glass,” Wanda said. “He has an incredible ability to bring people together, create meaningful experiences and tell the stories that make our industry special. He is helping South African wine reach new audiences and new communities, and that’s exactly the kind of leadership we want to celebrate.”

Tristan’s message was: “You do what you must in order to do what you want,” he said. “Thank you for the opportunity, and for believing in me.”

“Every year this programme reminds us that the future of wine does not only lie in vineyards, brands or markets, but even more so in our people,” Wanda adds. “The individuals recognised through 30 Under 30 are bringing fresh thinking, new energy and a genuine love for this industry. They are already making a difference, and I have no doubt they will help change the next chapter of South African wine.”
