Boogertman + Partners has been named as lead architect for the project, which aims to transform the existing airfield into a fully-fledged regional airport.
The development, located near Durbanville, is positioned as a complementary hub to Cape Town International Airport, with the goal of easing congestion while unlocking economic growth in the surrounding region.
With an estimated initial investment of between R8bn and R10bn, the first phase will include the construction of a passenger terminal, runway upgrades, and expanded aviation infrastructure. The broader vision extends beyond aviation, incorporating commercial, logistics, and hospitality components within a roughly 450ha precinct.
The architectural brief reflects a growing emphasis on sustainability and contextual design. Plans indicate a modern terminal structure that integrates with the surrounding Winelands landscape, balancing functionality with environmental sensitivity.
The phased development approach is intended to allow the airport to scale in line with demand, rather than overextending capacity in its early years.
International expertise is also being brought into the project through collaboration with global aviation planning specialists, strengthening the technical and operational foundation of the development.
Economic growth catalyst
From an economic perspective, the project is expected to have a substantial impact. Early projections suggest the creation of tens of thousands of jobs during construction and operation, with longer-term benefits tied to improved connectivity, tourism growth, and expanded logistics capacity in the region.
While timelines for completion remain dependent on regulatory approvals and market conditions, the appointment of a lead architect signals growing momentum behind the project. It also reflects investor confidence in the Western Cape’s continued role as a key economic hub.
As South Africa looks to modernise its infrastructure and attract investment, developments of this scale could play a pivotal role in shaping future growth corridors — provided execution matches ambition.
