Van Loveren Welcomes Historic Paarl Wine Estate Into The Family

In a strategic move that both honours legacy and future growth, Van Loveren Family Vineyards has announced the acquisition of the Landskroon wine brand and operational cellar on the historic Landskroon farm in Paarl.
The acquisition follows a recent transaction with Fijnland Holdings, which acquired the broader Landskroon property. Fijnland has a comprehensive strategy focused on agriculture, equestrian pursuits, and premium property development in the area. Van Loveren’s acquisition of the winery and brand ensures the continuation of winemaking on the farm—bringing together complementary visions for the land’s future.
A significant component of this acquisition is the legacy tied to the De Villiers family, custodians of Landskroon
for five generations. “Landskroon is an established name in South African wine, and it is an honour for our family to continue the legacy built over generations,” says Phillip Retief, Managing Director of Van Loveren Family Vineyards. “It is a natural fit, and a meaningful moment for our own family business, which has spanned three generations and we are excited to carry Landskroon into its next chapter”.
This move not only strengthens Van Loveren’s footprint in the Cape Winelands, but also builds on a long- standing connection with the Paarl region from which the Retief family originated before establishing themselves in Robertson in 1937.
Van Loveren has acquired 67 hectares of the greater 270-hectare Landskroon property, which includes a fully equipped winery, bottling facility, warehouse, and offices. This strategic acquisition enhances Van Loveren’s production capacity and strengthens its brand portfolio both locally and in key export markets.
The Landskroon site will also serve as the new brand home for Survivor Wines, one of Van Loveren’s most recent premium brand acquisitions. Survivor Wines will have a dedicated space in Paarl, bringing regional expressions from Swartland, Tradouw, and Darling under one roof in the bustling Suid-Agter Paarl Road, already renowned for its wine estates, restaurants and tourist attractions..
This move supports Van Loveren’s strategy of crafting regionally expressive wines through a collection of brands rooted in distinctive terroirs. “We see this as an opportunity to bring together multiple building blocks—different origins, varieties, and winemaking philosophies—all contributing to more layered, complex wines,” says Retief.
The cellar is expected to reopen in early 2026, allowing for thoughtful planning and upgrades. The Landskroon brand will remain active and continue under Van Loveren’s ownership, maintaining its own identity while benefiting from the marketing, sales, and distribution capabilities of one of South Africa’s most successful family-run wineries.
With this acquisition, Van Loveren not only pays tribute to a proud past but also takes a decisive step toward an exciting new chapter—one that brings together history, family values and vision.
