Kara Fox, chief of staff at Ecommerce Counsel, has released Human Still Wins: The Human Soul Skills AI Can't Replace, a book about where human value moves as artificial intelligence takes on more of the work people once used as evidence that they were good at their jobs.

There is an awkwardness to the argument that Fox does not try to avoid. Ecommerce Counsel builds and runs marketplace operations for brands on Amazon and Takealot, using automation across advertising, content, reporting and retail operations. Fox's job includes deciding where those systems should act, where a person should intervene, and who is responsible when the answer is wrong.

Human Still Wins sets out four capabilities Fox calls the Soul Skills: Trust, Judgement, Taste and Courage. Responsibility is the floor beneath all four. The argument is that a machine may produce the recommendation, draft the answer or execute the task, but a person still has to decide whether it belongs there and take responsibility for what happens next.

Fox interviewed every member of the Ecommerce Counsel team while researching the book, alongside people across six generations and a wide range of professions, including American poet and AI critic Joseph Fasano and Nico Goosen, who holds a PhD in AI. The question running through those conversations was not simply what AI could do, but what happened to people and organisations when they handed particular kinds of work over.

Human Still Wins carries the Authors Guild Human Authored certification, registration number 2658765, certifying the manuscript as human-authored.

What it means for the agency

For Ecommerce Counsel the book puts a public position on something most agencies leave unstated: where automation ends and accountability starts. Every client conversation about AI arrives at the same question: who answers for the outcome? The agency’s answer is now on the record with an ISBN attached.

“It would be convenient to pretend AI does everything,” says Maon Seidel, CEO of Ecommerce Counsel. “It doesn’t. Clients keep us because when something goes wrong at midnight on Black Friday there is a person who takes the call and takes the decision. Kara has written down what we have actually been arguing internally for years, which is that the machine handles the volume and the human carries the risk.”

Seidel says the book has already changed how the agency briefs new clients. “We are using the distinction in scoping conversations now. Here is what the system does, and here is the named person who answers for it. Clients can see what they are paying the human for instead of guessing at it.”

Fox says the book was written from the operational side rather than the commentary side. “I am not a futurist and I do not have a prediction. I have a job where I have to decide what the machine touches, and I got that decision wrong often enough to learn something and write about it.”

Human Still Wins: The Human Soul Skills AI Can't Replace is available in Kindle and paperback editions on Amazon. The US paperback ISBN is 979-8188933364 and the Amazon ASIN is B0HDM293S7. Companion material and the research behind the book are available at humanstillwins.com.
