South African Sommeliers Association Crowns Armand Ridgard As Nation’s Top Sommelier For 2025

The South African Sommeliers Association (SASA) is proud to announce Armand Ridgard as the Best Sommelier of South Africa 2025, following a full day of intense competition held on 10 September at The Rockefeller Hotel in Cape Town.

Held on the opening night of Cape Wine, the event drew a dynamic crowd of winemakers, hospitality professionals, educators, buyers, and international guests. By 17h00, the three finalists had been revealed: Armand Ridgard, George Young, and Laurie Cooper, who each delivered exceptional performances during the high-stakes live final.

The morning session saw seven of South Africa’s top sommeliers take part in the semi-finals, which tested their tasting ability, theoretical knowledge, and service acumen. SASA would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and congratulations to all seven semi-finalists for their professionalism and passion throughout the day: Amos Sobashe, Eric Wellie Botha, Freda-Marizen Jacobs, Gregory Lorimer, George Young, Laurie Cooper, and Armand Ridgard.

The finalists were evaluated by a distinguished panel of local and international judges, and SASA would like to sincerely thank each of them for their expertise and contribution to the competition:
