Where farm grit meets fitness

Held on 8 August, the inaugural competition took the physical demands of farm life and turned them into a head-to-head test of strength, speed, strategy and endurance.

The course was designed by Red Bull athlete and obstacle course racing champion Thomas van Tonder, with competitors working their way through a series of challenges inspired by everyday farm tasks.

Rather than simply rewarding the strongest or fastest athlete, each station was designed to test efficiency, composure and the ability to think under pressure.

After making it through the qualifying heats and knockout rounds, the field was narrowed down to the finalists, with Swart ultimately taking the inaugural men’s title and Strydom claiming the women’s crown.

Strydom takes the women’s title

For Strydom, the win was a particularly satisfying result for someone who describes herself as naturally competitive.

“Taking part in Red Bull Agri-Grit was an absolute pleasure. I love a good challenge, and Red Bull definitely delivered,” she said, praising the tough competition and organisation of the event.

Winning, she added, was a reminder of what can happen when determination meets opportunity. “If you put your mind to something and give it your all, you can achieve it. Never give up, keep pushing forward, and when an opportunity comes your way, grab it with both hands.”

Swart’s months of training pay off

On the men’s side, Swart’s victory was the payoff for months of early mornings, demanding training sessions and pushing through fatigue.

“Winning Red Bull Agri-Grit means a lot to me,” he said. “It was an incredibly demanding event that pushed me both physically and mentally, and coming out on top reflects the hard work, discipline and consistency I’ve put into my training.”

The atmosphere on the day also added to the experience, with competitors joined by families and spectators for a full day of competition, DJs, live entertainment and music performances.

More than just muscle

For van Tonder, who grew up on a farm himself, the event was about highlighting a different kind of athleticism.

“Agri-Grit was created to celebrate a kind of strength that doesn’t always get recognised,” he said. His experience growing up on a farm taught him that grit is about more than physical strength; it is also about staying focused, adapting when things get difficult and getting the job done.

He believes Swart and Strydom captured that idea perfectly. “Watching Lohan and Iana earn that title today was incredibly rewarding because they embodied exactly what this event stands for.”

A new kind of South African sporting challenge

The first Red Bull Agri-Grit has introduced a distinctly local take on functional fitness, drawing on South Africa’s farming heritage while turning familiar physical challenges into a competitive sporting format.

With its first champions now crowned, the inaugural event has set the stage for what could become a new fixture on South Africa’s fitness calendar.
