ABB says the learning spaces include a science laboratory, a robotics lab, a library and dedicated classrooms for Heads of Departments.
Access to quality STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education remains uneven across South Africa, particularly in under-resourced schools. A study by the Equal Education Law Centre reveals that of the country's 22 511 public schools, 74% lack libraries, 82% have no laboratories and 4% have no computer centres. At the same time, only 18% of university graduates specialise in science and engineering, underscoring the urgent need to develop future skills. ABB says its initiative at Mahlenga Secondary School is a practical step toward closing this gap and providing learners with the tools to succeed in a technology-driven world.
"Education is not only a social responsibility, it’s a strategic imperative for the future of our society," says Cynthia Khoali, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at ABB South Africa. "By investing in STEM learning environments, we are enabling young people to access opportunities that were previously out of reach. Our goal is to create a lasting impact by empowering learners to shape their futures in a rapidly evolving economy."
ABB says the initiative reflects its broader commitment to advancing STEM education in underserved communities. By delivering modern, functional spaces that encourage hands-on learning, ABB is helping to build a stronger pipeline of future engineers, scientists and innovators.
"This project speaks to ABB's purpose-driven approach," says Natalie Venter, Country Holding Officer for ABB South Africa. "Our 'Engineered to Outrun' philosophy is about equipping people to overcome barriers, whether they are technical, social, or economic. Supporting STEM education is one of the most effective ways we can do that. We believe that real progress begins with inclusive access to opportunity."
The handover at Mahlenga Secondary School signals more than an investment in infrastructure, it's an investment in long-term transformation. ABB concludes that it will continue to work alongside schools, communities and government partners to expand its impact, recognising that progress in education lays the foundation for more resilient communities and a more competitive economy.
