The new Shoprite supermarket on 5th Avenue in Lotus River in Cape Town opened with all of its Fresh departments, including the butchery, fully Halaal-certified.
The certification was developed in collaboration with the Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa (MJC), reflecting the retailer's focus on tailoring its offering to the needs of the local community.
The 1,667m2 store offers affordable groceries alongside a meat market, deli, bakery and fresh fruit & vegetables department.
Halaal certification at the heart of the store
For Shoprite, the new Lotus River store is more than another addition to its growing supermarket network. The fully Halaal-certified Fresh departments are a key part of the store's proposition.
Working with the MJC, Shoprite has ensured that customers can access a range of fresh food, including meat products, that meet Halaal requirements.
The move highlights the growing importance of localised retail formats and product offerings as major retailers seek to better serve the specific needs of the communities in which they operate.
The store also includes a Money Market counter, allowing customers to purchase prepaid electricity, airtime, data, lottery and bus tickets, as well as pay municipal bills.

The new supermarket employs 85 people from the local community, including 35 newly created positions.
It is managed by Shaheema Williams, who has been with Shoprite for 25 years and transferred to the new store from Shoprite Elsies River.
The opening forms part of Shoprite's continued expansion across South Africa. The retailer now operates 714 stores nationally, following the opening of 32 new supermarkets during its last financial year.
Reaching 100 stores in the Western Cape marks another milestone for the retailer in one of its key provincial markets.
A growing retail footprint
As South African consumers continue to place a premium on convenience, affordability and access to relevant products and services, supermarket expansion is increasingly about more than simply opening stores.
The Lotus River store combines a full grocery offering with specialised fresh departments, Halaal certification and financial and convenience services through its Money Market.
Shoprite Lotus River is located on 5th Avenue and trades from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week.
With its 100th Western Cape store now open, Shoprite's latest expansion signals both the continued growth of its national footprint and a focus on adapting its retail offering to the communities it serves.
