Domestic adventure travellers that spend more than R2 000 per day show a preference for wildlife safaris (12,2%), wine tours (10,3%), and whale watching (9,4%), according to data collected by the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA).
SATSA conducted a survey from November 15, 2023 to January 15, 2024, of more than 4 200 people, revealing trends in South Africa’s domestic travel market.
The study, in partnership with Wesgro through the 101 Adventures Western Cape Competition, revealed that more than 30% of South African adventure travellers were spending under R500 per person per day while nearly 10% had a budget of more than R2 000.
Holiday choices for domestic travellers spending less than R500 were motivated by adventure (20,3%), relaxation (21,2%), and family time (21,1%).
“This research shifts our understanding of South Africa's adventure traveller. We're seeing a market that values experience over expense,” said SATSA COO, Hannelie du Toit.
The survey also revealed domestic travellers’ interest in a variety of accommodation types. Self-catering was the favourite (21,2%) followed by B&Bs (17,4%), resorts (16%) and hotels (15,2%).
