The Society for Animals in Distress - Proudly Represented by 44 Riders
Written by: Save to InstapaperThe Society for Animals in Distress (SAID) is very proud to have had forty-four riders representing their organisation at this year’s Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge, which was held on Sunday, 17th November 2013. The Society’s Champions, all wearing a brightly coloured riding jersey; donning the new and refreshed SAID logo, did extremely well, considering the incredible heat and long hours they endured cycling the roads of Johannesburg.
It’s not all in a day’s work planning an event of this magnitude – not only in the JHB sporting calendar, but also for SAID’s fundraising team and those signing up to ride for the organisation.
With registrations having opened in March, there was plenty of time for SAID’s fundraising team and supporters to focus efforts towards fundraising leading up to the event, and SAID are delighted and humbled by the hard work their charity-bond riders have put in this year to not only create awareness for the organisation and the work they do, but by also raising funds for the core work of SAID; providing access to professional veterinary treatment to animals from low and no-income households within eight townships north and north-east of JHB.
Carmen Douglas-Kilfoil, from SAID’s fundraising team stated; “Many of our riders were not only supporting our cause for the first time, but were also first time riders at the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge – we wished them luck at a carbo-lunch, sponsored by Pize e Vino, Midrand, on our premises the day before the ride, Saturday, 16th November. It was great fun as well as a great privilege to spend some time with these champions for our cause, who have given our organisation a lot of “air-time” within their business and social networks this year while raising funds on our behalf for the race!”
Having received incredible support from corporate donors, SAID extends their heartfelt thanks to Tunley’s, EXP Auto, MySchoolMyVillageMyPlanet, Cyclone SW and Ivory Tower for sponsoring the SAID cycle jersey.
Virgin Active Sunninghill, Bedfordview and Roodepoort also eagerly and passionately hosted Spinathons for the organisation in September, October and November respectively, further creating awareness and raising funds for the organisation, as well as encouraging Virgin Active members to sign up and join the charity-bond team.
SAID would like to congratulate and thank Harford Sports Promotions (HSP), the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge administrative and planning organisation; given that the race is the second largest of it’s kind in the world, not to mention the creation and development of a platform of awareness for welfare organisations LIKE The Society for Animals in Distress participating; HSP really do an outstanding job.
The Society for Animals in Distress have committed, with excitement, to include this event to their annual calendar of fundraising events, as this was only the second time the organisation registered a charity-bond team.
“So keep this in mind avid riders, animal lovers and SAID supporters! In 2014, we want you!” Directly instructed from the SAID fundraising team.
About the Society for Animals in Distress
Established in 1958, The Society for Animals in Distress (SAID), formerly The Bantu Animal Welfare Society, continues to recognise the critical need for primary health and professional veterinary care for animals in the townships of Johannesburg.
As a non-profit organisation, SAID depends solely on the generosity of the public and corporate businesses for sponsorships and donations. These funds are employed yearly in the animal-care education of 14,000 children in 70 schools; the skills’ development of residents in the 14 working-horse communities of greater Tembisa, and in the care of their 200 equine charges; the overheads of 100,000 veterinary treatments rendered by seven mobile units, and our on-site large- and small-animal hospitals; the related modest costs of administration and professional employees, and a national programme to consult to other organisations in the interests of developing capacity within our welfare sector.
An integral part of our work with communities and pet owners is to provided a “basket of care” that initiates a life-long relationship made sustainable through owner responsibility and trust. The dividends of this relationship investment can be seen in the improved health and wellbeing of the animals we are privileged to serve.
