South Africa’s Brad Cox Crowned World Rally2 Champion in Morocco
Submitted by: Agnes MatladiBrad Cox (26), the South African motorsports sensation, has been crowned the 2024 World Rally2 Champion after a stellar performance at the Rallye Du Maroc, part of the World Rally-Raid Championship. Competing for the BAS World KTM Racing team, Cox clinched the championship by winning both the rally and the title, beating his closest rivals, Romain Dumontier (Team Honda) and Konrad Dąbrowski (Duust Rally), who placed second and third respectively.
The achievement captured the attention of Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, who took to social media to congratulate Cox, saying:
"26-year-old South African Bradley Cox has won the World Rally 2 Rally Raid Championship for 2024. This is really fitting because next year we are hosting the big one, W2RC, in SA."
South Africa will host the third round of the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC) from 18 to 24 May 2025 in North West and Limpopo. The race will cover diverse terrain, including bushveld plateaus, river crossings, and savannah plains, making it one of the most anticipated motorsport events of the year.
A Special Victory on New KTM Bike
Cox’s victory in Morocco was made even more special as he competed on the new 2025 KTM 450 Rally Factory Replica as a privateer, rather than a factory rider. He joins his friend and mentor, Ross Branch from Botswana, who also won the RallyGP World Championship in Morocco. With his Rally2 victory, Brad Cox will now move up to compete in the next Dakar Rally in the RallyGP class, the top tier in rally racing.
Brad Cox's Reflections on His Achievement
Reflecting on his win, Cox shared his determination and drive:
"Coming in I was down eight points, and while there was a chance to be champion, the week had to go perfectly for me—and it did. I had my goal set from the start, and I knew I’d do whatever it takes to win. Having the title ‘World Champion’ next to your name is an incredible feeling. It’s a massive group effort involving my team, family, and sponsors. Now, we prepare for Dakar, and I’m confident this win has given me the momentum and belief to achieve more.”
Praise from the Team
Bart van der Velden, Team Manager of BAS World KTM Racing, praised Cox’s growth and hard work:
"It’s been great to see all the training and hard work Brad has put in over the past few years paying off. Morocco was a test for us, and we’re thrilled it worked out. His improvements in navigation and training have been huge, and we’re confident heading into the Dakar Rally."
Road to Dakar and Future Aspirations
Earlier this year, Cox competed in the Dakar Rally, one of the most grueling motorsport events, where he finished 13th overall in the Bike Category and was the only South African to make it into the Top 20. With the support of sponsors like Toyota Gazoo Racing, ASP International Rope Access, BAS World KTM Racing Team, and others, Cox is now setting his sights on Dakar 2025.
