Gambling on the Olympics: SARGF Warns against Excessive and Irresponsible Gambling
Submitted by: Kelebogile LeepileAs the excitement of the Paris 2024 Olympics captivates South Africans and online sites are flooded with offers to wager on the Games, the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) urges the public to exercise caution and awareness regarding the risks of excessive and irresponsible gambling.
The allure of betting on Olympic events has grown significantly, transforming sports into a platform for wagers. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has established a sophisticated system to monitor betting patterns, a measure also implemented during previous Games such as Beijing and Vancouver. This system, managed by the Swiss-based International Sport Monitoring Group, collaborates with over 400 sports betting entities to report any irregularities, ensuring fair play and integrity.
Despite these precautions, the prevalence of illegal gambling sites and the largely unregulated online gambling industry, valued at approximately $25 billion globally, poses significant risks for bettors. Unscrupulous operators can exploit individuals and events, underscoring the need for heightened awareness and caution.
"The thrill of the Olympics should not overshadow the potential dangers of gambling," says Sibongile Simelane-Quntana, Executive Director of SARGF. "While betting can add an element of excitement to following your favourite sport, it is crucial to gamble responsibly and be aware of the risks associated with problem gambling."
The economic impact of the Olympics extends beyond private operators. Historically, governments have utilized lotteries to finance the Games, with notable examples including Canada's first lottery post-Montreal Olympics and China’s sports lottery for the Beijing Olympics. These initiatives underscore the significant role gambling revenues play in supporting sports and community projects.
However, the IOC has taken a firm stance against gambling on the Olympics, emphasizing that it contradicts the ethical principles of the Olympics. The IOC Code of Ethics clearly prohibits participants from betting on or promoting betting on Olympic competitions.
In light of the growing trend of sports betting, particularly during high-profile events like the Olympics, SARGF calls on South Africans to remain vigilant and prioritize responsible gambling practices. The Foundation provides numerous interventions, including free counselling and treatment, to support individuals facing gambling-related challenges.
For those concerned about their gambling behaviour and the gambling behaviour of family members, SARGF encourages a self-awareness assessment and seeking care through appropriate channels.
