57,5hrs Non-Stop Cycle for Housing

Image{pp}Ray D. Chaplin, the Cape Town adventurer who recently cycled for 41-days to cover the 2400km+ from home to Pretoria, is setting out to cycle for 57.5hrs... each hour representing R1000 required to build a house with the global housing organisation Habitat for Humanity. His target for the weekend is slightly more however, as he aims to raise R172,500 - enough to build homes for three families.
When asked what it's about, he shyly says he'll be "Pedalling the way to housing a nation. Having been a Habitat for Humanity supporter for several years, I thought it was time to up the anti... and make a big statement." Staged at the Technogym Wellness Centre [at CycleLab] in Fourways, Gauteng, the event will run from 5:15am on Friday 27 July and Ray will cycle non-stop from then until 2:45pm on Sunday 29 July... only being allowed to stop pedalling when nature calls. ImageHe invites everyone to come down and join the fun, and to help make a difference. Ray says "By coming down to the Cyclethon and making a small donation, people will be entered into the relevant category [eg: corporate, media, schools, pro, public] in what is promised to be a unique and exciting cycle race spanning the full 57,5hrs." Each donation allows cyclists to cycle for fifteen minutes, and the furthest cycled in the given time will get a chance to wear the yellow jersey on the Sunday... which also happens to fall on the last day of the Tour de France. For those worried about missing the Tour or other sport... fear not, as there will be large screen televisions and regular updates over the internet facilities on-hand. Don't despair if you are not a cyclist, it is open to all! "The main thing is to have fun and experience new things whilst making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate" says the 26-year old. Earlier this year he completed the Two Oceans Half Marathon in Cape Town pulling a small shack behind him. Ray will start his next housing adventure in September... a 4600km+ cycle journey around South Africa, towing a small shack behind his bicycle. Chaplin has received support from the National Department of Housing for his ideas of how to assist in building a nation. Contact details: Ray D.
