Kensington based primary school comes out tops in local innovative entrepreneurship program
Over 1000 pupils across the Western Cape came together for 3 months in a campaign with a difference, aimed at engaging, empowering and uplifting the future leaders of South Africa.
The Mmmm Yum Kidz Tuckshop, an initiative brought to you by Blue Ribbon, was an opportunity for pupils from 8 schools in and around the Western Cape region, to experience a crash course in entrepreneurship and business management.
For over 8 weeks, junior schools from Paarl, Kraaifontein, Phillipi, Kuyasa, Heideveld, Retreat and Strand became bustling business hubs for grade 1-7 pupils as they came together to create fully functional tuckshops- with the help of their favourite friend Jabu, the Blue Ribbon mascot. But it was not all fun and games…
The brand sought the expertise and brought aboard owner of TNC Wealth and celebrity wealth coach Samke Mhlongo, who compiled the Mmmm Yum Kidz Tuckhop workbook. The workbook- a practical guide to entrepreneurship and business- equipped the students with a crash course or ‘mini MBA’ that would equip them with both theory and the real world experience that is so crucial in society today. From the grassroots level of establishing business objectives, handling staff, implementing marketing strategies to calculating turnovers, the students were opportune to learn the fundamentals of service trading and discover their inner professional.
After an independent audit, St John’s was announced as the winning school in a fun filled celebration held on their school ground in Kensington, Cape Town. The pupils from grade 1- grade 7 came out with top scores against strict competition criterion, including completion of the course and participation of all grades and teachers. An overwhelming response from teachers and the St John’s Head Master, Mr Hans confirmed that the program was indeed a success and that the pupils greatly benefitted from the practical and theoretical life skill initiative.
“It has been a great experience to watch this campaign grow and evolve over these last months. While it was fun, it was for purpose greater than us as a brand, but for the pupils, the communities in which they dwell and the nation as a whole! We been fortunate to have some great mentors and leaders guiding the pupils and I know it will leave a permanent imprint in their lives,” commented Blue Ribbon’s Marketing Executive Bakeries Noleen Ballard- Tremeer.
Cape Town bread and buttered celebrities put their mentorship hats as they interacted and guided the pupils throughout the journey. Mentors, who included Kyeezi, Blake Williams, TK, Patty Monroe, Kia Johnson and entertainment veteran DJ Ready D were assigned to schools and loaned their expertise form their own diverse career journeys. Blake Williams was the school’s assigned mentor and his inspiring story of self realization in entrepreneurship fuelled and motivated the pupils catapulting them to the top achieved school for the first Mmmm Yum Kidz Tuckshop.
