Positive Changes Planned as Educor Welcomes Reinstatement of Higher Education Institutions
Written by: Olivia Jones Communications Save to Instapaper
22 August 2024 – The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, has reinstated the registration of Educor’s four higher education institutions: Damelin, City Varsity, ICESA City Campus, and Lyceum. This decision is a significant development for students, faculty, and management, reaffirming Educor's status as one of Southern Africa’s largest and most diverse private education providers. These institutions offer over 300 courses across various disciplines, supporting the academic growth of thousands of students.
At a landmark meeting on 26 September, attended by key stakeholders, including DHET Director General Dr Nkosinathi Sishi and Deputy Director General Dr Marcia Socikwa, it was resolved that all Educor institutions be fully reinstated with no administrative preconditions, aside from monthly monitoring reports for six months. The DG conveyed his support to the staff and students, affirming the DHET's commitment to the institutions' success.
Educor Holdings (Pty) Ltd, which manages seven educational brands across South Africa, began the year with 50,000 students enrolled in its institutions. The leadership team is actively working with DHET to maintain high standards of educational excellence.
Michael Thurley, Educor’s Chief Operating Officer, commented:"I would like to thank all the incredible staff who supported us throughout this period. Our focus remains on providing uninterrupted learning experiences for our students while ensuring a supportive environment for staff. We fully embrace the Minister’s decision and are committed to preserving the legacy of these institutions, which are essential to the future of higher education in South Africa."
It is important to note that all courses delivered by the institutions, for both current students and past graduates, remain fully accredited and recognised by the DHET and the South African Qualifications Authority. Educor is now ready to accept new student registrations across a wide range of disciplines.
Rebuilding for the Future
The reinstatement marks a pivotal moment in South Africa’s educational landscape, and Educor is committed to ensuring students receive quality education that enhances their employability. Thurley added:"In 2025, we aim to restore stability and redefine our position in the market. We are re-engineering our business model to better meet the evolving needs of the education sector and workforce. Our goal remains clear – to offer quality education that equips students for success in a dynamic world."
One example of Educor’s legacy is Damelin, which has provided eight decades of educational excellence in South Africa. Offering more than 60 programmes across four faculties—Commerce, Science & Technology, Humanities, and Education—Damelin provides flexible study options including full-time, part-time, distance, and online learning.
