King Shaka International Airport launches exciting project to boost Maths, Science and Literacy
Submitted by: AhmedSix Primary schools in the Kwa Mashu and Inanda areas north of Durban will be the proud recipients of the latest CAPS compliant Natural Science and Mathematics kits which have been donated by King Shaka International Airport. It is envisaged that this will indeed contribute to an improvement in the learner’s performance in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at school level so that more learners can pursue careers requiring these subjects at tertiary level which is essential to the economic growth of our country in future years.
Combined with the Science and Mathematics Kits, the six schools will also each receive a stunning mobile library which will further boost literacy levels at the schools. The innovative mobile libraries can be wheeled from one classroom to another, making them easily accessible to all learners.
“This investment in Math’s and Science and Literacy at the beneficiary schools will make it possible for some learners to experience hands-on learning through compulsory curriculum-based experiments for the very first time in their lives. Hence this will improve the learner’s performance in maths, science, technology, and engineering at school level so more learners can pursue careers requiring these subjects at tertiary level” said Colin Naidoo, the Senior Manager Corporate Affairs spokesperson for King Shaka International Airport.
Commenting on the King Shaka International Airport’s Socio-Economic Development work, Paul Makhanya said: "Our humble efforts are designed to make a contribution to deserving causes, helping to right the wrongs of yester-year, improving the socio-economic conditions of the needy and giving people back their dignity, through a wide range of community upliftment and sustainability programmes. In this regard, we see our sponsorship here at these six neighbouring Schools as satisfying just such a deserving cause, providing the necessary funding to deliver proper science and mathematics resources and libraries, which are so desperately needed here."
Zanele Ndlovu, Principal of Zamimfundo Primary School one of the beneficiary schools of this project added “We believe that these resources will help to improve the performance of learners in these subjects at our local schools. This will enable them to go on to university and ultimately begin careers in engineering and scientific fields. It is clear that by providing essential equipment in classrooms we can boost academic performance at schools. We are proud and grateful that King Shaka International Airport has chosen Zamimfundo Primary School to be a part of this initiative” said Mrs Ndlovu.
The roll-out of the Maths and Science Kits and Mobile libraries to the beneficiary schools was coordinated and managed by Ahmed Motala of the New Africa Education Foundation, an NPO that has partnered with King Shaka International Airport on other projects before
