How to Apply for the 2027 CAO Application
Written by: Christine Beukes Save to Instapaper
The race for the 2027 academic year has officially begun, with the Central Applications Office (CAO) opening applications for prospective students looking to study at participating universities and colleges.
As competition for limited spaces intensifies, early and accurate applications are more important than ever.
A centralised application system
The CAO simplifies the higher education application process by allowing students to apply to multiple institutions using a single application.
With one submission, applicants can choose up to six programmes across participating institutions, saving both time and costs compared to applying individually.
The system is widely used for institutions in KwaZulu-Natal, including universities, universities of technology and select private colleges.
When to apply for 2027
The 2027 CAO applications officially opened in March 2026, with most programmes closing between August and September 2026.
However, certain competitive courses, particularly in health sciences and related fields, may close earlier, making it essential for applicants to apply as soon as possible.
Late applications may be considered in some cases, but often come with higher fees and limited availability.
Step-by-step: How to apply through CAO
Applying through CAO is a structured but straightforward process:
- Prepare your documents
Before starting your application, ensure you have the following:
South African ID or passportLatest school results (Grade 11 or matric results)Contact details and email address
- Access the CAO platform
Visit the CAO website and begin your online application.
Applicants can only submit one application per entry year, so it’s important to complete it carefully.
- Select your programme choices
You can apply for up to six programmes.
These should be listed in order of preference, as institutions will assess your application based on your selections.
- Complete and submit your application
Fill in all required details, review your application, and click “Process My Application” to submit.
- Pay the administration fee
Your application will only be processed once the required fee is paid.
Payment can be made online or through EasyPay outlets.
- Upload supporting documents
Applicants must upload certified copies of required documents, including academic results and identification.
What happens after you apply?
Once submitted, the CAO forwards your application to your selected institutions, which will then assess and communicate outcomes directly.
Applicants can track their application status online using their CAO login details, and make changes to their programme choices if needed through the “Change of Mind” function.
Why applying early matters
South African universities remain highly competitive.
Some institutions receive hundreds of thousands of applications for a limited number of spaces, making early submission critical.
Applying early ensures:
Access to a wider range of programmesConsideration before courses reach capacityAvoidance of late application fees
The 2027 CAO application process presents a key opportunity for prospective students to secure their place in higher education.
With applications now open, students are encouraged to act early, prepare thoroughly, and submit accurate applications to improve their chances of success.
As the higher education landscape becomes increasingly competitive, planning ahead is no longer optional.
It is essential.
Good luck with your 2027 CAO application!
