We are proud to announce the appointments of Melissa Steele and Nina Greyling as Directors at Nortons Inc. from 1 September 2025.
Melissa and Nina have deep expertise, proven leadership, and a shared commitment to excellence—qualities that make them outstanding additions to our leadership team. They have both demonstrated the commitment to our clients that we value in Nortons.
Nina has been involved in a number of recent significant competition, administrative and constitutional law cases. She has been involved in matters as diverse as challenging the appointment of former Judge Hlope to the Judicial Service Commission on behalf of Freedom Under Law, to forming part of the team assisting e.tv in challenging the setting of the analogue switch off date both in the Constitutional Court and subsequently the High Court. She has advised mining clients on significant new developments in the mining sector (including potential amendments to the MPRDA). She also played a significant role in the team opposing the recent Sun International and Peermont proposed merger. Nina is also currently involved in the review that has been brought by Postnet against the decision of ICASA that the conveying of packages of less than 1kg forms part of the South African Post Office’s statutory monopoly. Nina also has extensive experience in mining law, particularly in matters involving the Interim Protection of Informal Land Rights Act (IPILRA). Her Master's degree in Mining Law further strengthens our capabilities in this highly specialised field. She is also involved in high profile criminal investigations and related civil proceedings. Nina’s dedication to her clients and her enthusiasm as well as her deeply held principles are characteristics that have been recognised in the firm.
Melissa is an astute, dedicated, and insightful legal practitioner whose practice spans competition law, constitutional and administrative law, and white-collar crime and corruption matters. Melissa’s professionalism, sharp legal insights, and commitment to her clients are hallmarks of her practice. Melissa is currently part of the Nortons team challenging the National Health Insurance Act. She is also part of the team that successfully represented a large multinational company in the High Court and the Supreme Court of Appeal in a contractual dispute worth well in excess of R1 billion, and in concluding one of the first Corporate Alternative Dispute Resolution agreements with the National Prosecuting Authority. She has also assisted clients in filing complaints with the Information Regulator regarding data breaches and protecting clients and their confidential information during and pursuant to dawn raids conducted by the Competition Commission. Melissa is also involved in a number of pro bono matters, including assisting Freedom Under Law in relation to the long running social grants tender case. She also has a keen interest in AI and the law and recently published an article in the Business Day dealing with attorneys’ readiness for the use of AI in the legal sector and its associated risks.
These appointments reaffirm our commitment to offering exceptional legal services in an increasingly complex and regulated environment.
Melissa and Nina are not only outstanding legal minds - they are also trusted advisors to our clients and future shapers of our firm.
