Unplug Yourself goes to Comic Con Africa

From the 22nd to the 25th of September, fans of board gaming, cosplay, trading card games and real time games will be spoilt for choice with Unplug Yourself’s wide range of entertainment options. Touted as the ultimate pop culture and gaming festival, Comic Con Africa will feature numerous events and specialist areas.
The four-day festival focusses on all elements of pop culture, bringing international and local comic artists, film and TV celebrities, and Cosplayers to South Africa. Comic Con Africa will be packed with championships, competitions, super show specials, product launches, workshops, panels, Q&A sessions, screenings, activations and interactive experiences, ensuring there is something for everyone from casual fans to genuine geeks to enjoy. The festival will also have a section for children called KidsCon, making it a day out for the whole family.
Philip Galliford, spokesperson for Unplug Yourself is thrilled that Comic Con Africa is back: “Comic Con Africa is a huge event on the gaming calendar and this year it’s going to be bigger and better than ever. Unplug Yourself will be providing visitors with an array of experiences for all ages and gaming levels, from beginners to champions. We look forward to showcasing a diverse range of engaging and entertaining games.”
Below are some of the Unplug Yourself activities visitors can partake in:
Unplug Yourself Gaming Space
As one enters through the Comic Con Africa doors, they will encounter the Unplug Yourself area where an array of activities will be on the go, including board gaming, demonstrations and competitions.
There will be a section of family-friendly board gaming within Unplug Yourself. Visitors can have a go at the latest editions of long-standing games and discover new ones. There will also be a learn-to-play element with teachers guiding players.
Miniatures Gaming – an area showcasing the art and skill of miniature gaming. Games such as X-Wing, Star Wars Legion and Marvel Crisis Protocol will be showcased, in partnership with Jix Hobbies.
D&D – Convention One-Shots – an area dedicated to a game that has turned into a worldwide phenomenon. Here first-time players can experience the amazing fantasy world and narratives of Dungeons & Dragons, in partnership with Dum Dum Die.
Competitive Trading Card Game (TCG) Events – Unplug Yourself will be running sanctioned Magic: the Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh! events in partnership with Nexus. With lots of prizes up for grabs, both players and spectators will be on the edge of their seats.
Competitive Ticket to Ride Event – this tournament will provide the opportunity for visitors to experience a travel board game that is fun and engaging. It’s ideal for ages eight and over.
KidsCon
Pokémon learn to play at KidsCon – children will have the opportunity to discover the Pokémon trading card game and learn how to play in partnership with Nintendo.
Snap Ships activations – kids and parents can explore the limitless building potential of Snap Ships. Snap Ships is a versatile, modular building system for creating multiple objects. All sets and pieces are interchangeable, so kids can build however they want! As Comic Con is the pinnacle celebration of SNAPtember, visitors can expect great deals on the Snap Ships range and try their hand at building their own unique creations!
Comic Con Treasure Hunt with EXIT!
For those who enjoy immersive encounters, solving clues and going on a treasure hunt, this Comic Con Africa experience will bring out their inner Sherlock Holmes. Participation is free, visitors get to explore the event while doing the hunt and there are prizes up for grabs on completion.
