The History of Shopkins

When Shopkins hit the toy shelves in 2014, who could have predicted that they would be at the forefront of the collectibles craze and turn into one of the toy world’s biggest phenomena?

For those who are not in the know, Shopkins are a range of tiny, collectable toys, originally inspired by grocery store items. With each new wave a different theme has been explored, ensuring the toys are always fresh, relevant and exciting. Each plastic figure has its own recognisable face, characteristics and unique name. They also have special finishes such as translucent, glittery or squishy.

Each series has its own particular theme and the figures each have a degree of rarity, from common, rare and ultra-rare to special edition, limited edition, and exclusive collectible figures.

“Shopkins are one of those rare toy lines that just keep giving. Each new wave has fascinated collectors, children and parents. Each character captures the essence of what a collectible toy truly is – interesting, fun and a colourful part of a greater whole,” explains Megan van der Westhuizen, spokesperson for Prima Toys.

There are hundreds of Shopkins in the Shopkins World and series include Wild Style, Small Mart, World Vacation, Join the Party, Chef club and more.

Shopkins are ideal for girls aged five years and older. They are available from Toys R Us, ToyZone, Toy Kingdom, Checkers and Pick ‘n Pay.
