One of South Africa's most well known instrumental music groups, DNA Strings started in 2001 in Stellenbosch as a jam session between friends. Their highly energetic and interactive live show, as well as their ability to captivate audiences without lyrics brought them the success that has seen them through these few years. In the time they were together, DNA Strings performed in almost every town in South Africa. They also played at most major art festivals and went overseas to perform at events like the Ukkasie Festival in the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2004 and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland in 2006. Partnering with Beyers Truter from Beyerskloof Wines in 2007, they covered more than 60 000 kilometers last year in a relentless effort to bring their blend of African, Celtic and Spanish music to South Africa and Namibia. When asked what each of them will do from here, Herman Steyn, the current violinist said, “I loved being part of this band and learnt a lot from the experience. Music is a part of me and I will always keep on writing and performing.” Herman will soon be leaving for South Korea to pursue an exciting career as musical director at a school there. Bassist, Jacques Steyn will continue as a sessionist and will be launching his solo career while Iwan Kemp, the drummer and manager, will explore other business and music opportunities. Lastly, the percussionist, Flip du Plessis will be completing his studies in accounting while Adriaan de Beer, the guitarist is starting his studies in Engineering.“It is with great appreciation that we say goodbye for now,” comments du Plessis. “Thank you to all the legendary people who supported us, came to our shows, worked with us, bought our albums, gave us sponsorships and made it possible for DNA Strings to exist. It’s been an awesome adventure but all good things must come to an end.”
