THE GIRLFRIENDS PAINTED THE CINEMAS PINK
21 July 2023 – Swathes of pretty and perky shades of pink enfolded Ster-Kinekor cinemas last night, as the girlfriends came out in their hundreds to party, “Barbie” style! The country’s leading cinema chain hosted its monthly ‘Girlfriends’ Getaway’ event at 11 of its sites around the country, and filled 30 cinemas at these sites as tickets sold out faster than you can say “Ken”!
Sponsored events, activations, prizes, competitions and goodie bags were the order of the evening, and the pink-clad audiences enjoyed every minute of the pre-events before moving into the cinemas for the main event, the pre-screening of “Barbie”. Many of the ladies watching the movie said it brought back wonderful childhood memories of their Barbie doll collections and the hours spent playing with the dolls, dressing them up and creating their own fantasy Barbie and Ken stories.
The cinemas hosting the Girlfriends’ Getaway events included: Cresta (2 screens), Eastgate (2 screens), Mall of Africa (3 screens) and Sandton (4 screens) in Joburg; The Grove (2 screens) in Pretoria: Gateway (3 screens) in Umhlanga; Baywest (3 screens) in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth); Somerset (1 screen) in Somerset West; and Cavendish (3 screens), Tygervalley (3 screens) and V&A Waterfront (4 screens) in Cape Town.
The sponsors also came out to play at the “Barbie” party in a big way, and the guests were certainly in the pink with all the special treats on offer. Two pretty pink microwaves were up for grabs from Teljoy by scanning a QR code.
Some lucky winners went home with hampers and vouchers from Cotton On, Superga, Aldo Shoes, Standard Beauty, Skin Functional, Nova chocolates, and The Fish & Chip Co, while everyone received a goodie bag with items from Swiitch Beauty, McNabs, Motherkind and Conde Nast. Lip and make-up touch-up stations from ARC and Essence ensured the girlfriends looked the part, and everyone was encouraged to dress in pink for a chance to win spot prizes. Sparkly pink drinks from Haus Wines added to the festivities.
The “Barbie” movie officially releases today, 21 July, at Ster-Kinekor cinemas around the country.
