rAge 2024 A Galaxy of Gaming Fashion and Art Awaits
Submitted by: Tyler OliverJohannesburg, South Africa – 15 November 2024 – The Really Awesome Gaming Expo (rAge), South Africa’s premier gaming and pop culture expo, is set to return to the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec from 29 November to 1 December 2024.
With a vast universe of gaming culture on offer, rAge 2024 promises more than games and high-tech gadgets—it celebrates creativity in all forms, from fashion to handcrafted art. Visitors can immerse themselves in a weekend of discovery, stocking up on unique festive season gifts and experiencing a wide array of creative showcases.
The Artists Alley
Artists Alley is expected to be a major highlight at this year’s rAge. This curated area will showcase unique keepsakes, handcrafted cosplay accessories, and bespoke gifts. Nadja Späth, Director of Legion Events SA and curator of Artists Alley, emphasises what makes this year’s offerings unique.
“We’ve rigorously vetted all vendors and artists to ensure that every item on sale is unique, handcrafted, and tailored. This isn’t a place for mass-produced items—every piece reflects passion and creativity.”
With over 48 stands, Artists Alley has expanded from last year. Expect an array of unique items, from plushies and crocheted treasures to handmade tabletop role-playing accessories, including resin-cast dice, wooden dice towers, and DM screens. Other items include sculptures, cosplay accessories, and custom jewellery. Black Friday (29 November) will feature exclusive specials, adding an extra reason to explore this section.
In addition, the Alley will have a dedicated art area where visitors can purchase original artwork from local artists. This year, with the surge of AI-generated art, Artists Alley has chosen to prioritise human-made creativity. Artists will also offer merchandise such as stickers, T-shirts, and mugs and even take custom commissions.
For those seeking something unique, the Alley will feature temporary airbrushed tattoos.
A Gaming Fashion Show
Adding excitement to the event, Nibble Esports will present a gaming fashion show, merging cosplay, fandom merchandise, and street fashion. This year’s show aims to celebrate the influence of gaming culture on fashion.
“This year’s fashion show is about celebrating how gaming culture inspires fashion in real life,” says Ruth Bleeker, Managing Director at Nibble. “We’ll showcase everything from full cosplay outfits to casual gaming-inspired streetwear, focusing on the intersection of fandom, identity, and style.”
Attendees can also look forward to seeing SPOT, the sophisticated agile mobile robot from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), and contributions from UJ’s Fashion Department, which adds to the expo’s innovation.
Ruth emphasises that gaming fashion is about personal expression and identity, not just cosplay competitions. “Gamers have a rich array of interests beyond just games, from music and fashion to sports. This show highlights how fashion in gaming culture extends to personal style and community.”
This year’s fashion theme will spotlight techwear, urban casual, and Afrofuturism. Expect a blend of streetwear styles that have become popular on TikTok and Instagram and are gaining traction in South Africa. Best of all, many items showcased will be available for purchase at rAge, allowing visitors to take home their favourite looks and accessories.
