Play in Paarl this Autumn
Submitted by: Ronelda Visser
With the school holidays and April long weekends around the corner, Paarl should definitely be on the itinerary if you’re looking to escape the city. The grape harvest has just been completed and it feels as if nature is slowing down and putting her autumn finery on display. Paarl is the ideal destination for a multi-generational group with a wide range of experiences on offer.
Babylonstoren is a favorite stop with plenty of activities to entertain the entire family. It has a spectacular fruit and vegetable garden, unique accommodation with great food and wine offerings. Join the cellar master for a unique cellar tour, which starts in the vineyards and meander through the underground wine tunnel to the impressive maturation cellar and ends in the wine museum.
The Simondium Guild Tour introduces visitors to the world of artisans and craftsmanship. Painted Wolf Wines is an award-winning family wine business with a strong emphasis on conservation that recently moved to the venue in this small village in Simondium, just outside Paarl. They have been involved with wild dog conservation projects for over 15 years. Taste their range of specialists’ wines from organic and sustainably farmed grapes. Fanglasstic is a boutique glass painting studio where kids and grown-ups can create incredible glassware, while Stillman Distillery makes craft rum and gin, and beer lovers would appreciate Soul Barrel Brewing Company.
Rhebokskloof wine estate has earned its reputation as a family-friendly destination. Pack up the family and book an idyllic picnic in one of the most gorgeous settings in the Cape Winelands. The sprawling lawns under the oak trees overlooking the dam provide a picturesque setting that will shine on your socials. There is plenty of space for the kids to play, while adults enjoy a wine tasting. There is also a restaurant and pizzeria on the farm for those rainy days to enjoy. It is the ideal destination for adventure seekers with horse riding, quad biking and MTB and hiking trails.
Perdeberg Cellars was started in the early 1940s and celebrated 80 years of excellence in 2021. They have become prominent in the South African winemaking industry and have won local and international acclaim for their wines. The laid-back destination is perfect for relaxing with family or a group of friends. Enjoy a wine pairing or one of their specialist tastings, featuring award-winning wines with inspirational pairing partners such as chocolate or marshmallows.
