During the 2008 Internationalen Spirituosen Wettbewerb (International Spirits Awards) held in Germany, Wilderer walked away with one gold medal, four silver medals and an excellence award, competing with 629 entries overall. With Wilderer being the only South African Grappa and Schnapps distiller to have qualified to compete overseas, his Eau de Vie has succeeded in returning home with several awards from both Germany and Austria.

With over 30 000 distilleries in Germany and over 60 000 in Austria, this is quite a feat for the Paarl Distiller. During the harvest, Wilderer use only grapes that have not been exposed to any chemicals, which have been harvested in the cleanest possible manner and possess their typical original flavour. With meticulous attention being paid to the selection and preparation of fruit and all skill and nose focused on choosing the ‘heart’ of the distillation, another critical element in the pursuit of the perfect Schnapps is the strive to meet international standards.

For Helmut Wilderer and his authentic Eau de Vie Distillery in Paarl, competing internationally, was always part of producing the perfect Grappa and Schnapps! The Distillery is also home to a restaurant and tasting room, which in summer season regularly hosts events that attract people from near and far. Today, all over the world, and particularly in South Africa, an increased awareness of quality and the demand for fine tasting and noble distillations is on the increase.
