Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels Fund has stepped in to support three young athletes, Gauta Mahlakoane, 22, Karabo Mokoo, 21, and Maxwell Ndou, 24, who are capturing the hearts of South Africans with their remarkable cycling journey from Limpopo to Cape Town.
The trio, known as the Gauta BMX cyclists, embarked on their ambitious 1,700km journey from Burgersfort, Limpopo, on 2 April, equipped only with their bicycles, determination, and a dream. Their goal: to inspire young people and promote a healthy lifestyle, demonstrating that there are positive alternatives to social challenges like alcohol and drug abuse.
Their story quickly went viral on social media as South Africans rallied behind their cause, inspired by their grit and message. Now past the halfway mark of their journey, the cyclists have often had to sleep at police stations or petrol stops for safety. They are expected to arrive in Cape Town by Sunday, having planned overnight stops in Leeu Gamka, Laingsburg, Worcester, and the Mother City.
In response to their determination and positive message, Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels Fund has donated R20,000 to help cover the cyclists’ accommodation for the final stretch of their ride.
“Thank you Jacaranda FM for the support. I don’t know what to say,” an overwhelmed Maxwell Ndou told Martin Bester, host of Jacaranda FM’s Breakfast with Martin Bester, on air. “We appreciate everything you are doing for us. Everyone thought we were crazy when we started this journey, but we really believe in what we are doing and the help Jacaranda FM has given us will go a long way.”
“This story is everything South Africa needs right now—young people chasing a dream, challenging limits, and inspiring others,” Martin Bester adds. “We’re proud to support these incredible young men, and we can’t wait to see what they accomplish beyond this ride.”
The Gauta BMX cyclists are also determined to give back to their community. Upon their return to Limpopo, they plan to establish a cycling club to introduce more young people to the joys of cycling —creating a safe, healthy space for youth in their community.
