More about the Johannesburg Children's Home
The Johannesburg Children’s Home is one of the oldest children’s Homes in Johannesburg and this December the Home will be celebrating 130 years of service to the community. The Home started in 1892 in Fordsburg, Johannesburg by Mrs Von Brandis. Since it’s early days, the Home has provided much needed care for vulnerable and orphaned children in Johannesburg.
The Home is based in Observatory, Johannesburg and has grown into a professional Child and Youth Care Centre with the addition of an Early Childhood Development Centre - Funda Ngo Thando which currently provides early childhood education for over 50 children between the ages of 2 and 5 years. The Johannesburg Children’s Home cares for 64 children ranging from the age of 3yrs to 21yrs. Providing much needed residential, educational, developmental, and therapeutic care for vulnerable children.
The Home relies on donations and funding from the community and government but has recently identified the need for additional sustainable funding to match the ever-increasing financial needs of providing quality care for the children at the Home.
Implementation of the Social Enterprise Imvelo Experience creates sustainable funding opportunities for the organisation. This has launched the Home into various other markets such as catering and hospitality to help promote the sustainability of the organisation. Annette Brokensha, Director of the Home said “The Johannesburg Children’s Home is a testament to the goodwill of South Africans and their profound generosity to support children in need of care.
We feel honoured to have played a part in caring for orphans and vulnerable children and restoring hope to desperate children and to continue the legacy of care.
The Children’s Home has had to reinvent itself to make ends meet time and again and every time there has been a groundswell of support from the South African community. We truly know what it is like to be together in hard times and good times. We look forward to celebrating with all our supporters.”
