Bringing books to life in Munsieville
Written by: MyPressportal Team Save to Instapaper“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” Dr Seuss.
Storytime came alive for children at Munsieville Primary School on World Read Aloud Day on 1 February when nine Silverstar Casino (https://www.tsogosun.com/silverstar-casino) staff volunteers gathered at the school to read to the grade RRs, Rs and 1s.
World Read Aloud Day, celebrated in 100 countries, encourages people to embrace the responsibility to spread the importance and power of reading aloud and sharing stories with children, and to advocate for literacy as a human right.
The Silverstar volunteers selected their books from the library that the property had previously sponsored and established – and set about enchanting the little learners with words and actions.
Mampho Tlholoe, Payroll Clerk, read a story about grandchildren’s curiosity to a Grade R class. “Always give children the attention they need. This story reminded me about my childhood when my grandmother was more concerned whether we ate than our dirty laundry.”
Hazel Stilianou, CRM Manager, brought Dr Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham alive, which inspires children not to be afraid. She says, “What a privilege to share the joy of reading with the kids. Reading opens up a world of imagination!”
Bomi Bukali, Communications Manager, also chose a Dr Seuss book, which she says, “reminded me of my childhood and how my Dad was instrumental in my love of reading! It was such fun interacting with the little ones and being surrounded by their great energy.”
Adele Wilson, Silverstar’s CSI Manager, says, “Reading aloud is one of the most important things a parent and caregiver can do with children. It build a strong language foundation, it introduces vocabulary, and can help develop empathy, curiosity and critical thinking. Read Aloud Day gave us the opportunity to share this privilege with children at Munsieville Primary, while also mobilising our staff to volunteer and get involved. We don’t know who enjoyed the day more – the staff or the children!”
