Community Computer Centre Draws Hundreds of Users
Written by: Samantha Schwarer Save to Instapaper{pp}The One Global Economy Community Computer Centre in Austerville has already registered some 300 users, and attracts new users every day. Jobseekers use the free Internet connection to check employment websites, as well as typing up and printing their CVs. Soon they will be able to fax job applications directly from the centre as well. In the afternoons, schoolchildren flock to the centre to do homework, research projects and play educational computer games.
Seeing a need in the South Durban area for a free facility that would connect the community to the information age, US-based One Global Economy partnered with eThekwini Municipality and a group of local NGOs to create this centre. Twelve computers and a colour printer are available for use, soon to be supplemented with a further eight computers and faxing and photocopying facilities. One Global Economy’s commitment does not stop there, however.Users at the centre can access a range of valuable information on topics ranging from money management to health to getting legal help, all on the information portal known as The Beehive (http://durban.thebeehive.org). The portal stays up to date with current events, and is regularly reviewed to ensure that the content is accessible and useful. The centre will also be offering computer courses, from basic introductions to more advanced courses. Also on offer will be the Digital Connectors programme, empowering youth through an extensive training programme to develop their ICT skills and take their place in the community as technology experts. This programme is expected to build a skills and knowledge base that will extend the life of the centre out into the community. One Global Economy will partner with various corporations, and with the municipality, to offer skills training and job opportunities to the Digital Connectors. One Global Economy are confident that this computer centre will become a knowledge hub in the South Durban community; a place where people can meet to access and share information and improve their quality of life. The centre’s location in the Austerville Library furthers that aim, extending the role of the library itself within the community.Contact Details: Samantha Schwarer - Project Coordinator This email address is being protected from spambots.
