Local engineering company awards bursary 
Tashlyn Walbrugh, an intern at Moroff & Kuhne, has been chosen to receive a full bursary from local engineering consultancy firm, Moroff & Kuhne, to study Civil Engineering at Pretoria University of Technology. Tashlyn is one of seven students busy with internships at the company,which accounts for 33% of the technical staff. “It was a huge surprise to hear my name!” says Tashlyn when it was announced at the company’s 10th Anniversary Awards Dinner last week. “It's an indescribable feeling. Throughout the whole year I knew that one of us would receive a bursary but it never fazed me – I just wanted to do my best. What I have learnt here in the short period of time has been so valuable and I really appreciate it. It will only encourage me more to do my best in whatever I do, so it's really special,” Tashlyn comments. Moroff & Kuhne established its own Human Resources Development Program in 2004 as a result of being unable to find suitable technical staff for their structural and civil engineering practice. “The education of our young people is very important to us and by offering this bursary to a deserving candidate we believe that we are paying it forward,” explains Nik Moroff, MD of the company. Science & Technology Minister Mosibudi Mangena, has said that the country is short of at least 1000 engineers with five years experience and that the number of students that are qualifying (238 in 2002) is just not closing this gap. Moroff & Kuhne offers students a year’s internship in their Somerset West Office where they are exposed to basic engineering principles, business meetings and CAD drafting. “At the end of the year the student has a better understanding of business and engineering practices before embarking on their formal engineering studies,” says Suritha Venter, HR Manager at Moroff & Kuhne. ”I would advise every young person to take on something like this before studying. I will forever be indebted to Moroff & Kuhne for opening my eyes to a world where there's always a solution for every problem and for teaching me that with hard work and determination comes great rewards,” comments Remell Olifant, another of the interns. Although the program is not accredited the company does present the students with a certificate at the end of the internship which details the modules that have been completed.
