The company was nominated in the category “Engineering/Architectural Functional” and the winner was the International Convention Centre in Durban. Other nominations in the category included Standard Bank Head office in Durban and Impala Platinum Toll. The Honda project was the only project in this category from the Western Cape.
“The main challenge of this building was the restriction imposed by the architects with regards to the roof heights. Through our unique exposed truss design, which gives the feel of ship-like structures, the synergy between structural effectiveness and architectural appeal was successfully achieved. Car showrooms give architects lots of scope to create something different and we are thrilled to be involved in such projects” says Nik Moroff, MD of the company. Other similar projects that Moroff & Kühne have been involved with locally are the Peugeot dealership on the N2 in Somerset West and the new Daimler Chrysler Commercial Vehicle Centre. Their latest project is the new Lexus dealership which is currently being built next to Toyota in Somerset West.
This is not the first time Moroff & Kühne has been nominated for industry awards. In 2004 they were awarded the Regional and National Concrete Manufacturers Association award in the category ‘Concrete Masonry Individual Houses’ for the work done on House Bloch, Fresnaye. They were also nominated for an award by the same Association for the work done on Fercon Foods, Montague Gardens.
The company, which specializes in industrial, commercial and up-market residential structural and civil design, has been in operation for ten years. They have offices in Somerset West and Cape Town and have recently expanded their presence to Johannesburg, Durban and Windhoek, with upcoming industrial and residential projects in these cities.
