A mammogram is a test that is used to create an X-ray image of breast tissue. It is a commonly used screening tool for breast cancer and is generally recommended for women over the age of 40.
Here’s how the procedure typically goes:
You will be asked to remove any clothing or jewelry from the waist up, and to put on a hospital gown. You will be asked to stand in front of the mammogram machine, which has a flat surface for your breast to be placed on.
One of your breasts will be placed on the machine’s flat surface and a plastic plate will be gently pressed against it. The pressure is necessary to flatten the breast tissue and get a clear image.
The technologist will then take an X-ray image of your breast. The process will be repeated for the other breast.
The entire mammogram procedure usually takes about 20-30 minutes. It can be uncomfortable, but it is not generally painful. If you have any concerns about the procedure, be sure to discuss them with your healthcare provider.
Why is a mammogram generally recommended for women over the age of 40?
Mammograms are generally recommended for women over the age of 40 because the risk of breast cancer increases with age. According to the American Cancer Society, about two out of three breast cancers are found in women who are over the age of 55. However, the decision to start getting mammograms and how often to get them is typically based on a woman’s individual risk factors for breast cancer, as well as her personal preferences. Some women may be at higher risk for breast cancer due to a family history of the disease, a genetic predisposition, or other factors. These women may be advised to start getting mammograms at an earlier age and/or to get them more frequently. It’s important to talk to your healthcare provider about your specific risk factors and to make a decision about mammograms that is right for you.
