The Future of Addiction Treatment Today

Written by: Think Wellness Save to Instapaper
[Pressportal.co.za] There is a widespread cliché in traditional addiction treatment that describes insanity as doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.Yet we see addicted individuals attending one traditional 12 Step program to another, expecting different results. As one ex-patient remarked, “I’m a 12 Step graduate, I’ve done the 12 Steps twelve times”.
The fact is that most traditional 12 Step programs do not have impressive success rates. So what is different about the Think Wellness program? Steven Putter, Program Director at Think Wellness, says “many advances have been made in understanding the thought processes, the human neurology and the biochemical processes of humans. Technology has merged with linguistics and psychotherapy in ways which empower the individual to take control of the body/mind state. Our program combines ancient disciplines such as acupuncture, kinesiology and reflexology, with newer approaches such as neuro-linguistic programming, biofeedback, nutrition and nutritional supplements, whilst looking for underlying allergies that research has proven to produce less desirable states such as depression and anxiety. NIA (neuro-muscular integrative action, a combination of tai-chi, yoga anddance) and EFT (emotional freedom technique), combined with fresh air, a residential treatment facility cradled by mountains in peaceful surroundings and a future empowerment/design-based methodology rather than a past/addiction methodology, provides the basis for real healing on all levels for addicted individuals.”He adds, “the problem with traditional 12 Step programs is that many people go from one treatment centre to the next repeating Steps 1, 2 and 3, sometimes Step 4.”The motivation for change is the catalyst for change. A female saint in the 16th Century said, “God, if I worship Thee because I fear hell then send me to hell. If I worship Thee in the hope of going to heaven, then withhold heaven from me. But if I worship Thee for Thy own sake, then withhold not from me the eternal beauty.” Although Think Wellness is a non-religious treatment facility, individual spirituality and a religious support base is encouraged as part of aftercare as this provides a healthier social culture and a wider choice of association. It is a fulfilling future free of addiction that Think Wellness co-manages with their clients, where they assist the client to conceive, design and instill the methodology of thought that leaves them with a perception with which they can see their resources, their possibilities, their strengths and their weaknesses and with guidance, utilise these to achieve their dreams.“We employ a focused, to-the-point method to bring the person that was in active addiction to a point of empathy and objective reality in order to lay the addictive personality to rest. The greater part of this program is based on the potential of our clients where they are assisted with the execution and maintenance of their recovery plan. The programs here are totally flexible and the best methodology suited for the client is followed in each individual case”, says Steven Putter.Skills development is an important part of the program at Think Wellness. An unskilled person does not stand a very good chance of remaining functional and will probably end in a worse addictive spiral than before. Think Wellness assists in recovery management for the client as well as the family. Family members follow a home-program during the inpatient phase of the client’s program allowing them to gain a full understanding of addiction and empowering them not only to handle and lay to rest the past, but to set boundaries, be assertive and with respect and love, assist in guiding the person in recovery towards their best possible future.Recovery agents appointed from family members, organisations and medical professionals work in conjunction with staff at Think Wellness through e-based, telephonic, group, and individual sessions. The full duration of the program is twelve months and incorporates the primary care, secondary care, skills development, reintegration and outpatient phases which are different for each person. A program director liaises with the client and their family members, taking the clients current situation, opportunities and resources into consideration in order to design and execute a finely-tuned recovery program which is achievable, desired, timely, and fun.A simple philosophy of “together we shall”.It is said that between the extremes lies the truth. It appears that people with addiction problems, depression, stress, anxiety and a host of other conditions will find a recovery program at Think Wellness that fits them like a glove. To find out more visit their website at www.thinkwellness.co.za or contact their Cape Town office on (021) 556-3161 to arrange an appointment with the program director.
