Media Advisory: Rotary and SAVIC ENDPolio Vaccination Drive in Pretoria

Media colleagues are invited to report on the importance of polio vaccinations ahead of the Rotary Clubs of Pretoria West and Hatfield and the South African Vaccination and Immunisation Centre (SAVIC) at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University Polio Vaccination Drive at the Sunnypark Shopping Centre in Sunnyside, Pretoria.

Media colleagues are also invited to attend the event.

The campaign also aims to raise funds to achieve a polio-free world and for South Africa to maintain its Polio-Free status as certified by the World Health Organization African Regional Certification Commission in 2019 https://www.sanews.gov.za/south-africa/south-africa-certified-polio-free

Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa, 13 October 2022 — Rotary members in Pretoria (Pretoria West and Hatfield) in partnership with the South African Vaccination and Immunisation Centre (SAVIC) at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University have embarked on an awareness campaign and vaccination drive to raise awareness about polio.

Given the recent wild poliovirus outbreak in Mozambique (Read the announcement made by the United Nations https://news.un.org/en/story/2022/05/1118502), the campaign will also be providing immunisation catch-up vaccination for all infant vaccines, including the polio vaccine, to children aged 0-12 years, on 22 October 2022 at Sunnypark Shopping Centre, Sunnyside, Pretoria. Furthermore, the Rotary Clubs will also raise funds to support the eradication of polio — a vaccine-preventable disease that still threatens children in parts of the world today.

The Vaccination Drive aims to administer just over 200 vaccines onsite.

About SAVIC
The South African Vaccination and Immunisation Centre (SAVIC) is a Public-Private Academic Alliance between the National Department of Health (NDoH), the vaccine industry, academic institutions and other stakeholders. SAVIC’s activities are undertaken in close collaboration with the NDoH and the WHO, thereby ensuring that all healthcare worker training follows national and WHO guidelines. SAVIC has a unique aim of strengthening immunisation programmes by bridging the gap through the cascading of up-to-date vaccine-related information to the community and operational-level staff with various innovative outreach programmes. Thus, SAVIC creates a platform whereby experts from universities, the NDoH and provincial departments of health, the vaccine industry and non-governmental organisations interact in a joint effort to improve public health programmes concerning vaccine-preventable diseases. The strategic operational areas of SAVIC include Education and Training, Research, and Technical Support, Advocacy and Community Outreach. For more information visit savic.ac.za
