Improved reading glasses to keep you productive at all distances Recent developments in customized multi-focal lenses allows you to improve your vision at all distances – with absolutely no distortion. There are many lens designs available depending on your unique visual needs. For example bi-focal lenses will help you to enjoy clear vision at two points of focus,
- Distant work, such as watching a power point presentation in the boardroom
- Near work, such as reading documents.
Simply drop your eyes down to read and lift your eyes up for distant objects and your eyes naturally seek out the appropriate portion of the lens. Multi-focal lenses help you to focus at different distances through the same lenses and generally have three points of focus
- Distant work, such as watching a power point presentation
- Intermediate work, such as working on your computer
- Near work, such as reading documents.
A small portion at the bottom of the lens is reserved for your near-vision correction, while the top portion is for distance and the zone in between is designed to allow your eyes to move smoothly between distance and near. Brandon Sieff, MD of Sieff Optometrists explains that, “it may take 2-3 weeks for your eyes to get used to your new multi-focals before your eyes naturally work with the lens to make use of the correct portion of the lens to get optimal vision.”
Coatings to protect your eyes against harmful light Time spent in front of the computer may have an effect on the health and safety of your eyes. Research proves that people who regularly work on a computer complain of difficulties with their vision, such as eyestrain and headaches. “These problems are not solely caused by computer work, but by a combination of factors,” says Sieff. Some of the contributors include,
- The use of bi-focals set for reading when computer monitors are usually further away
- The set distance of the computer monitor causing the worker to focus on one specific distance for a long period of time
- Computer monitors that are brightest in the middle, fading around the edges
- Prolonged use of the computer without breaks
- Inadequate or improper placement of lighting, such as too much glare or too dark
- Other eye problems, such as allergies, dry eyes, unaligned eye muscles.
“Even though there is little evidence of permanent eye damage caused by frequent computer work, it is important that you ensure your glasses have anti-reflex coatings,” insists Sieff. Anti-reflex coatings on your lenses reduce the light reflected by the lens and enhance the comfort and quality of your vision. These coatings can be applied to all lenses and are especially recommended for computer work. “Anti-reflex coatings are also recommended for UV protection and night driving, and the UV400 coating will ensure your glasses are 100% UV protected,” adds Sieff.
Tints to brighten your view Sieff Optometrist’s hi-tech laboratories are able to tint your lenses in a selection of colours, such as grey, brown, green, blue, pink and yellow. What’s more, you can select the style of tint from fixed tint that is a permanent colour consistently throughout the lens with the darkness or intensity varying depending on the amount of UV protection you require. Gradient tints give the lens a variable appearance from dark at the top to progressively lighter. Gradient tints come in a variety of gradient patterns. These are very cost effective and are often used instead of a photochromic lens. Photochromic tints are embedded in the lens material and allow the lens to go darker in the sun and lighter indoors. These are various photochromic options available in both glass and plastic depending on the amount of UV protection you require. “Tints can be designed in a fashionable way to protect your eyes when the light in your environment is always changing,” says Sieff.
