Detox diets ineffective for long-term weight loss, nourish the body instead, say experts

According to health experts, eating natural nutritious whole foods like fruits and vegetables, getting daily exercise, managing stress, having a healthy sleep routine, and staying hydrated may be more effective than detox diets for long-term weight loss.
Health and wellness expert Vanessa Ascencao said that after a busy holiday season and overindulging, choosing a healthy balanced diet and lifestyle that will nourish the body whilst limiting consumption of highly processed foods is key to optimising the body’s natural detoxification process.
“Detox diets are low in nutrients and may lead to gastrointestinal distress, tiredness, and disrupt metabolism and blood sugar levels. Rather increase intake of easily digestible foods such as fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and plant proteins, and drink lots of water which will help cleanse, lead to weight loss and boost immunity,” said Ascencao.
“Most of us do not receive enough vitamins and nourishment from our diets, so make sustainable health choices, eat with intention, minimise sugary or processed foods and gut irritants such as alcohol and coffee and choose high-quality supplements that support the body such as nutrient-rich, 100% nature-based Marcus Rohrer Spirulina,” added Ascencao.
Studies show that spirulina, a blue-green algae, is packed with nutrients, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties which may help reduce heavy metals and toxins in the body and improve muscle strength, endurance, overall health, and immunity.
Pharmacist and life coach Giulia Criscuolo said that in addition to eating healthy, it is vital to take care of your mental health, including limiting screen time, maintaining social connections, and managing stress, which is linked to overeating, lack of sleep, reduced exercise and increased weight gain.
“Keep a healthy sleep routine as chronic sleep deprivation can lead to several physical and mental issues including diabetes, hypertension, anxiety, and depression. Exercise regularly -- a study shows that just 30 minutes of physical activity a day could lower the risk of depression,” said Criscuolo.
“Cultivate healthy relationships based on trust and respect, plan regular visits with family and friends and make socialising as important as exercise. Prioritise self-care, be kind to yourself, especially during difficult times and practice conscious relaxation by doing restorative activities such as yoga or meditation which helps calm the mind and balance the nervous system,” added Criscuolo.
