Nine Indonesian Coffee Origins Presented by KAPPI at FOODEX Japan 2026

Tokyo, Japan — Indonesia’s coffee diversity was once again brought to the global stage through the participation of the Indonesian Coffee Education & Development Foundation (KAPPI) at FOODEX Japan 2026, one of Asia’s largest food and beverage exhibitions, held from March 10–13, 2026 at Tokyo Big Sight.
KAPPI’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to introducing the richness of Indonesian coffee to international markets while expanding collaboration with global coffee industry stakeholders. Japan remains a key market for Indonesian coffee, supported by a long history of trade relations and a growing specialty coffee culture.
Showcasing Indonesia’s Diverse Coffee Origins
As part of Indonesia’s coffee presentation at FOODEX Japan, KAPPI introduced a curated selection of coffee origins that highlights the diversity of Indonesia’s coffee-producing regions. This approach underscores Indonesia’s position not only as one of the world’s largest coffee producers, but also as a country with a wide spectrum of flavor profiles shaped by its diverse terroirs.
During the exhibition, KAPPI showcased roasted coffee from nine Indonesian origins that are well-recognized in global markets: Gayo, Mandheling, Java, Bali, Flores, Kalosi, Java Robusta, Flores Robusta, and Rimba Excelsa. Through this curated selection, visitors and industry professionals were able to experience and better understand the distinctive characteristics of each coffee-producing region in Indonesia.
The diversity of these origins reflects the richness of Indonesian coffee terroir. From the highlands of Gayo, known for its floral and citrus notes, to Mandheling with its full body and complex profile, each coffee expresses a unique regional identity.
Particular attention was drawn to Rimba Excelsa, a relatively rare coffee species that grows naturally in the tropical forest ecosystems of Sumatra. Its presence highlights Indonesia’s biodiversity and growing global interest in lesser-known coffee varieties within the specialty segment.
Product Innovation Through Drip Coffee
In addition to roasted coffee, KAPPI also introduced its assorted drip coffee products, designed to offer a convenient way to enjoy Indonesian coffee without compromising quality. The products are available in two origin variants: Bali and Java.
The drip coffee format was selected in response to its growing popularity in Japan, where single-serve brewing has become a widely adopted method. Through this product, KAPPI aims to demonstrate that Indonesian coffee is not only a raw material for international roasters, but also a ready-to-consume product aligned with modern lifestyle trends.
Strengthening The Coffee Ecosystem
According to Roby Wibisono of KAPPI, the strength of Indonesian coffee lies in its diversity of origins and the ecosystem that supports it from upstream to downstream.
“Indonesia has a wide range of coffee origins, each with its own distinct flavor profile. Through FOODEX Japan, we aim to demonstrate that Indonesian coffee is not a single category, but a spectrum shaped by diverse terroirs. At the same time, KAPPI continues to work closely at the upstream level through education and farmer assistance programs across coffee-producing regions, ensuring improved quality and better value for farmers,” said Roby Wibisono.
He further emphasized the importance of strengthening farmer capacity as part of Indonesia’s global coffee journey.
“The strength of Indonesian coffee lies not only in its origins, but also in the farmers behind it. That is why KAPPI is committed not only to promoting Indonesian coffee internationally, but also to providing education and assistance to farmers to continuously improve quality,” he added.
Expanding Indonesia’s Global Coffee Presence
For KAPPI, participation in FOODEX Japan is part of a broader journey to introduce Indonesian coffee through international platforms. This aligns with the organization’s mission to strengthen the coffee ecosystem through education, farmer capacity building, and global promotion.
In recent years, KAPPI has actively brought Indonesian coffee to international stages as part of its coffee diplomacy approach, positioning coffee not only as a product but also as a story of land, culture, and people.
In addition to FOODEX Japan 2026, KAPPI has supported Indonesia’s presence at the Indonesia Pavilion at Osaka World Expo 2025, and participated in the Marrakech Festival 2025 in Morocco, which brings together stakeholders from the coffee, gastronomy, and cultural sectors worldwide.
At the international level, this vision is reflected in KAPPI’s slogan, “Better Coffee, Better People.” The slogan emphasizes that coffee development is not only about improving product quality, but also about enhancing human capacity—from farmers and processors to the next generation of coffee industry players.
From coffee farms across the Indonesian archipelago to the global stage, a cup of Indonesian coffee carries the story of land, tradition, and the dedication of the farmers who form the foundation of its journey.
