Giraf Macadamia Milk Revitalises South Africa’s Plant Based Milk Market With Innovation And Integrity

Giraf Macadamia Milk: A Journey of Passion and Innovation

In recent years, consumer demand for plant milk alternatives has surged, driven by a growing awareness of environmental sustainability, health benefits, and dietary preferences with a global market estimated at USD 56.37 billion in 2023 and projected to grow at a CAGR of 7.2% by 2030.

However, Oat milk has recently come under fire for causing insulin spikes, Soy milk is being frowned upon for using genetically modified crops and Almond milk is blamed for droughts in the California water table (where 83% of almonds are grown). At the top of the list of complaints is the use of vegetable oils to thicken these products.

Amongst the trend towards plant-based milks, Macadamia milk is gaining popularity as it addresses all the concerns raised above because macadamia nuts are high in good fats and low in carbs, so no added seed oils needed.

Millennials and Gen Z are particularly attracted to its nutritional benefits, sustainability, and low cholesterol, while the rise of veganism and plant-based diets further boosts its demand.

South Africa, the world's leading macadamia producer, has a distinct advantage in this expanding market in which Giraf Macadamia Milk, with no added seed oils stands out due to its rich, creamy texture and the sustainable practices of certified local farmers.

With a successful year of distribution achieved, Philip Moufarrige, the Founder and Managing Director of Giraf Macadamia and CEO of AmberMacs, reflects on the company’s journey and the future that lies ahead.

A Clear Mission

Driven by a commitment to bridge the gap between consumers and nature, (more specifically, Mpumalanga’s passionate macadamia farmers), Giraf Macadamia has carved out a unique niche in the plant-based milk market.

Their mission is clear: to authentically connect the consumer back to nature through offering the most delicious, versatile, and sustainably sourced range of macadamia nut milks. They launched the first three variants of Giraf Macadamia Milk in May 2024: proudly made from 100% South African-grown macadamias, Giraf milks are rich in Omega 3,6 and 7 - not only healthier, dairy-free and gluten-free but also barista-friendly, making them a perfect choice for a wide variety of uses and nutritionally beneficial.

Trials and Triumphs

The vision to launch Giraf Macadamia Milk took three years to realise, says Philip who also recognised that the journey was not without challenges. He explains;

“From collaborating with a top global designer to craft the brand identity inspired by the graceful giraffe, (in homage to the African origin of our macadamias), to formulating the perfect macadamia milk with experts in Spain and Italy, our journey was one of passion, dedication and collaboration.”

“Perseverance led to an initial production run in Italy, to prove our product's potential. We overcame packaging challenges, regulatory differences, and multiple logistical hurdles to offer our range of milks internationally without having to ship vast quantities of liquid around the world. Through determination and strategic partnerships, we secured distribution channels and retail listings in South Africa and the UK and have a production facility in Italy now for our European customers.”

In May 2024 the team successfully went to market with three delicious variants: Giraf Macadamia Original, Giraf Macadamia with Oats, and Giraf Macadamia with Vanilla.

Distribution expanded from Mpumalanga to Cape Town and Gauteng, securing listings in Wellness Warehouse, Dischem, Spar and discerning coffee shops. Soon also launching in PicknPay.  Giraf is available nationwide, with presence online through platforms like Faithful to Nature, Amazon, Makro and Takealot, with international availability in the UK as well.

Additionally, the newly launched Giraf Monthly Drop subscription offers plant-milk enthusiasts a hassle-free delivery of a 6-packs of their choice of macadamia milk every month purchased online directly from Giraf and delivered to your door.

The Best Nut Milk You’ll Ever Try!

Many who have tried other plant based alternative milks often found them too watery and thin often, but the consumer feedback on Giraf has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising its creamy texture and dairy-like taste.

Best milk alternative! I've tried several non-dairy alternatives and have to say this is the best by far. The flavour is creamy without being overpowering. It's silky smooth and a really great taste with no dodgy aftertaste.” - G Berkowitz

“This is the best non-dairy product I have ever had..! I can't drink milk and am so pleased to at last find a replacement that I really like. It is very well priced, I have it in tea, for breakfast and as a drink.” - Alexander Suffolk

“Finally, a good dairy-free Latte! Since I’ve been on a lactose-free diet, I’ve struggled to find a creamy and rich alternative to milk. (Almond milk is way too thin, and Oat milk’s taste is too overwhelming, especially in my coffee and Lattes). I feel this Giraf Macadamia is just perfect in terms of taste and texture, and highly recommended.” - SimplyVirtuoso “

Delicious and perfect with coffee. I love how the macadamia milk blends with coffee and froths perfectly. The taste is mild and really delicious! Not overpowering like some milk alternatives. The texture is smooth and creamy. I highly recommend this as an alternative to dairy.” - Rich

Soon this positive experience, and Giraf's reputation for creating delicious, high-quality nut milks was affirmed by two wins from the 2024 Food & Home Magazine's Best in Food awards. A Silver for Giraf Macadamia Original as runner up for Dairy Alternatives in the Vegan Category and a Gold for Giraf Macadamia with Vanilla wins Best Milk in the Cold Drinks Category.

These accolades highlight the brand's knack for producing innovative products that meet consumer demand for sustainable, healthier, and tastier options.

Innovation, Sustainability & Community

Giraf realised a growing need from sugar-savvy consumers who wanted even more control over their sugar intake. Despite Giraf products already boasting a lower carbohydrate content than other dairy or plant milks – they launched a NEW Unsweetened variant with zero sugar in the December 2024 which has now become a bestseller.

Notwithstanding their rarity, South African-grown macadamias are central to the brands’ success due to Giraf’s advantage of having control over their entire farm to table supply chain and valued partnerships with over 200 certified AmberGap farmers who help ensure traceability and adherence to sustainable practices, all while delivering the finest quality nuts.

Giraf is committed to sustainability, transitioning to 100% solar energy at its processing plant and producing biochar from macadamia shells. Macadamia milk production also boasts a lower water and carbon footprint compared to dairy milk, aligning with international sustainability standards.

More so, the team actively engages with local communities, supporting farmers and partnering with the African School of Coffee to educate baristas on alternative milk pairings. Their collaborations with environmental and health organisations, like the Vegan Society, further underscore their commitment to positive impact.

Stay Grounded. Aim High!

Our journey over the past year has reinforced the importance of staying true to our roots. “Keep it simple and honour the farmer”, says Philip, who insists that his commitment to transparency with his grower community, his insistence on quality and excellent taste and the whole company’s philosophy of sustainability with purpose forms the foundation of the brands’ success.

Now 100% grown and produced in South Africa, Giraf Macadamia Milk aspires to be the leading choice for plant-based milk afficionados in the country and beyond. By nurturing partnerships, innovating products, and expanding reach, Giraf strives to redefine the plant-based industry and honour the communities it serves.

Looking ahead, plans include expansion into Europe and introducing a range of new macadamia milk variants like Cacao and other delicious, macadamia-based products.
