She worked as a designer for Max Mara before starting her own label in 1968. From 1997 to 2000 she worked with French designer Christian Lacroix, after which she started her own company again.
In 2011, Jil Sander closed down her eponymous label and re-launched it under the name Jil Sander Sportswear. In 2013, this collection won the International Woolmark Prize for Wool Excellence Award for its “craftsmanship, quality and innovation”
