Every morning the Deal a Day website lists a new item for sale and each customer on the database receives an e-mail notification of the day’s deal. Each deal is only valid until midnight after which it expires and a new item is listed for sale.
A very popular item recently was a Fujifilm FinePix S6500 digital camera sold at the discounted price of R 2 650. At the time of writing, this model traded at R 4496 on various other websites. IT products are by far the most popular items from suppliers, followed by household appliances.
The two entrepreneurs at the helm of this project, Frans-Johan van Dyk and Adriaan Odendaal, says the most difficult part of the project was the development of the website and negotiations with suppliers. After a number of trusted suppliers joined Deal a Day though, others were queuing up to have their stock published as well.
The second challenge for Van Dyk and Odendaal is to grow their database of customers. Within the first three months the database has grown to 12 500 subscribers already. Their goal is to distribute 1 million e-mail newsletters daily with a projection that each customer will spend approximately R 3 per month.
To create more traction to their cause Deal a Day is currently running a referral competition. If a person refers ten friends to Deal a Day he / she stands a chance of winning an Apple iPod. To take part in the competition each person needs to register for the deal of the day on the website and follow the competition instructions on the newsletter. The competition expires on 15 September 2007.
Van Dyk and Odendaal are already escalating the Deal a Day project to facilitate daily special deals on travel destinations, aptly called Travel Deal a Day. This website will be live in one month.
