SA Mattress Manufacturer Warns of Latex Label Abuse and Publicly Confirms It Does Not Make One
Written by: Andries Taljaard Save to InstapaperBLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa: South African mattress manufacturer Mr Mattress has published consumer guidance on latex mattresses, opening with an unusual disclosure: the company does not manufacture one.
"We make foam, memory foam and hybrid coil mattresses, not latex, and we will never put the word latex on a foam bed to catch the search," says founder Andries Taljaard. "That is exactly why we published a latex guide. The label has become one of the most abused words in South African bedding, and a factory with no latex to sell is the right party to explain it."
Rubber, not foam
According to the guidance, genuine latex is elastic rubber, traditionally derived from rubber tree sap, while most mattresses sold in South Africa, including the company's own, are polyurethane foam. The manufacturer warns that terms such as "latex feel" and "latex-touch" frequently appear on beds containing no latex at all, and that even genuine latex products vary widely: natural latex is the durable premium article, synthetic latex is a petroleum based imitation, and most latex sold locally is a blend.
The company advises buyers to ask three questions before paying a latex premium: the percentage of natural versus synthetic content, whether the latex forms the mattress core or only a thin topper layer, and whether certification can be produced in writing.
An honest referral and honest alternatives
Mr Mattress says buyers who specifically want a certified, majority natural latex core should purchase from a latex specialist. For shoppers who want the qualities latex is famous for, the company points to its own honestly labelled products: the Revive Memory Foam, an open cell breathable memory foam over a high density core from R4,899, for latex style contouring; and the Active Foam, with a 50 kg per cubic metre published density core from R3,399, for latex style responsiveness and firm support. Both carry 10 year written warranties.
"Neither of those is latex, and our product pages say so," says Taljaard. "A material claim you have to blur is a refund waiting to happen. We would rather publish the spec, deliver anywhere in South Africa, and let a 365 night home trial settle whether the mattress suits you."
