An Online Country Market

Submitted by: Claire Bennette

In kitchens and on farms, in gardens and garages, home-made, home spun and home grown goods are being produced throughout South Africa. From chefs to vintners, cheesmakers and bakers, potters and planters, there is a rich abundance of handmade foods, beverages and goods being made with love and attention by individual craftsmen and women. FarmGate provides the perfect virtual market place for shoppers and producers to interact.

FarmGate, South Africa's first Online Country Market, was created by the team behind Country Careers, the only job portal specialising in advertising country jobs.

There has been a huge boom in hand-made, home grown and hand crafted produce over the last few years. Specialised markets have been popping up all over the cities of South Africa selling products from jams and pickles to organic meat and home baked bread, from handmade china tea sets to hand woven baskets. Home spun has become super cool! The FarmGate website showcases local, seasonal, handmade producers and their produce. (Please note that FarmGate is not an e-commerce site. Contact producers directly and benefit from farm gate prices!)

As society becomes more and more concerned with what we put into our bodies and what we put out into the environment, there is a growing demand for lekker local produce. We are starting to go back to basics – back to the local sheep farmer, the artisan baker, the fig jam made from the fruit off the tree in the garden. We want to buy our goods from our neighbours, our friends and our communities, so our money goes to them and not to multinationals and big corporations. We are looking towards local foodies, cooks, craftsmen and artists for quality handmade goods, and we want to get them right at 'the farm gate'.

We all love to buy natural products from innovative small producers. For example, Cornelia's old imbuia pieces re-invented into French classics with hand painted finishes, Mariaan's beautiful kussings vol liefde, Sheena's fun hobby horses for hours of happiness for the kids, and natural boland honey. But how to find all these creative, clever creatures and their wares?

FarmGate is the answer. We are exploring the length and breadth of South Africa in search of small producers of food, drink, plant products, arts, crafts and other handmade items. The FarmGate website provides a market place to showcase products online, to reach out to foodies and home-connoisseurs, to chefs, caterers, restaurateurs, deli and gift-shop owners, to you and to me – in fact, anyone looking for quality local products that have been hand crafted with love and care.

For our buyers, we understand that your local farmer's market is the place to be on a Saturday morning, and that it will never be replaced by an online equivalent, but have you ever visited another city or town and been to one of their markets? Ever seen something that you wish you could get at home? Now you can! You can source local products from across the country.

For our suppliers, FarmGate is an online market site designed to give maximum exposure to your products. Every product page is a web page in its own right. This means that people searching for your products on the web will be directed to your individual product page. You build up your own brand, and individual presence on Google. Potential customers can visit your virtual market stall, view your products online, and contact you directly for queries or orders, all while you are creating, producing, sleeping, living! Contact us now for your own product page on FarmGate.

SUPER LAUNCH SPECIAL!! ONLY R198 for 6 months, that's R33/month. List up to 5 products on FarmGate, with up to 8 images per product, and get your products out there.
