Vivienne Westwood in South Africa

Submitted by: Brent Grung
{pp}The International Fashion Sale has undoubtedly pioneered a few firsts for the fashion loving consumer in South Africa. With the 24th show starting this Thursday, it seems the IFS has set itself as a firm favourite with the young and old alike. With consistent promises of massive discounts bargain hunters are always rewarded.

It seems IFS has decided to shake things up and everyone from, bargain hunters to militant fashionistas, are in for a treat. The Coca Cola Dome in Northgate has become the new playground for consumers to shop, relax and enjoy the feast that the best of the best in world fashion has to offer.

No doubt, there may be a frenzied rush by shoppers to see, feel, experience and hopefully own legendary items being exclusively sold at IFS. Vivienne Westwood has arrived and our streets might never be the same.

This is not a bold statement when one is reminded that Vivienne Westwood is a designer who not only continues to be creative in ways many would never dare venture; but practically spear headed an entire decade. The seventies were a definitive breakaway from decades of assimilated and dictatorial fashion, and we have Punk Rockers to thank for that.

Vivienne Westwood is perhaps one of Britain’s greatest designer export, but her clothing has only been available in South Africa to the exclusive few on a private sale basis, for the very first time her designer wear will be openly available to fashion buying public.

Is it true to say that fashion is the outward expression of our inner most desires? Whatever your personal philosophical outlook on clothing and the fashion industry may be, there is no doubt then that Vivienne Westwood deserves all the praise lavished on her. No person would dare stand up and deny that it was Vivienne Westwood’s anarchistic attack on the style of her era which had really started the notion that individuals should use fashion to express their own personal views and not those of their society. Did the safety pin in a nose, ripped jeans and anti-political messages blazed on her shirts help shift the social consciousness. A sign of the times or the genuine expression of a truly inspired artist? All any person who lived to see it transpire can say is - it was certainly like nothing which had come before it.

Vivienne Westwood’s designs have shown longevity and her constant surprises prove that she was no flash in the pan. Her brazen use of all things British; such as wools, tweed and tartans show a sense of appreciation for a society that at the same time was being given a wakeup call.

How many proud South Africans are experiencing similar feelings in a climate of power cuts, power struggles, promises and lies but an unflinching love for a place we call our home. It seems to be a testament to her genius that those ideals grappling Britain circa 1970 are the ones we find ourselves in today. If a revolution is to begin, no one can claim to not have the right outfit to voice their opinion.

This International Fashion Sale is no doubt going to be an exciting step forward for everyone who’s been and everyone who is yet to discover their style, their way and all under one roof.
