The 2024 Sasol Solar Challenge (SSC) has drawn to an exhilarating close, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable achievements and innovations across South Africa. Covering an astounding 19,833.4 km of solar-powered progress, the event showcased the incredible potential of solar technology and the power of global collaboration in the race towards a sustainable future.
Pioneering Routes and Record-Breaking Achievements
This year, the challenge broke new ground, not only in terms of technology but also in its scenic route. For the first time, teams ventured through the picturesque Northwestern parts of South Africa, journeying from Secunda to Cape Town. Along the way, they were greeted by diverse landscapes and enthusiastic communities, creating an unforgettable experience for participants and spectators alike.
The event also marked an extraordinary achievement, with the Innoptus Solar Team setting a new daily distance record of 703 km. This milestone highlighted the advancements in solar-powered vehicles and the dedication of the teams involved.
Dries De Saegher, Team Manager of the Innoptus Solar Team, expressed his excitement: "Thank you for everything, Robert! It was a pleasure to be in South Africa and participate in the Sasol Solar Challenge. Beautiful routes, enthusiastic children, inspiring teams… an honour to win this amazing challenge with the Innoptus Solar Team."
Ensuring Safety and Seamless Coordination
Ensuring the safety of participants was no small feat. Think Bike, in partnership with Bridgestone, played a crucial role in marshalling the event, covering over 52,498 km. Their seamless coordination with local traffic authorities allowed the solar teams to focus on the challenge, knowing they were in safe hands.
A Think Bike representative commented: "In partnership with Bridgestone, we safely and effectively marshalled the teams along this breathtaking route. We are grateful to the local authorities for their support, and we look forward to being of service again at future events."
Fostering Global Unity and Technological Innovation
For Rob Walker, Director of the Sasol Solar Challenge, this year’s event stood out not only for its technological advancements but for the global unity it fostered. "This year’s challenge has shown what can be achieved when brilliant minds from around the world come together. The Innoptus Solar Team’s record-breaking achievement of 703 km in a single day is a testament to the power of solar technology. But more than that, it’s about the shared journey – from the incredible support from local communities to the engagement of over 5000 scholars along the way."
Inspiring the Next Generation
A key highlight of the 2024 challenge was its engagement with young minds. Over 5000 scholars along the route had the opportunity to learn about solar energy and sustainability, sparking their interest in science and technology. The challenge made a tangible impact on 22 communities, reinforcing the importance of local involvement in promoting renewable energy.
Global Reach and Economic Impact
The Sasol Solar Challenge continues to grow in global significance. This year, 450 individuals from 24 countries and 14 international and local teams participated, with the event reaching over 500 million people worldwide through a combination of 10100 still images, 150 hours of video content, and 1032 media pieces.
In addition to showcasing technological innovation, the challenge also contributed over R100 million to South Africa’s economy, highlighting its role as a driver of local economic growth.
Looking Ahead to 2026
As the 2024 Sasol Solar Challenge concludes, plans are already in motion for the 2026 edition, which will cover new areas such as Kakamas, Springbok, Upington, and Augrabies.
