Energy efficiency and energy management are hot topics in the press and in our communities in at the moment. &Beyond is the world’s leader in luxury experiential travel and safaris, with roots in Africa and South Asia. Recently, &Beyond took a giant leap to save energy and money at their lodges in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

&Beyond wanted to gain an understanding of their total energy usage and how they could possibly, not only save energy, but save money in the long run as well. The Eskom bills only provided an overall energy usage amount, which &Beyond used for billing. They were unable to gain an indepth insights on how to save energy from the electricity bills.

Cape Town based Energy Efficiency Company, New Southern Energy (NSE), was able to assess the situation and provide a variety of unique energy saving solutions to decrease the amount of energy spent on a daily basis. The lodge consists of 30 rooms with a large staff component living on site. NSE proposed solutions focused on attractive financial savings. To identify the most appropriate solutions and exactly what impact it would have, NSE installed multi-level smart metering technology at strategic points throughout the lodge. This is known as first-phase energy measurement.

Through the installed meters, NSE and &Beyond can measure exactly when and how the site uses energy. This is compared with the Eskom bills and alternative tariffs to optimize the choice of billing tariff. Sub-meters with load control were installed on various rooms and the main appliances in each room is controlled via an online platform which communicates directly with the smart-meters and controls. Through this measurement, the &Beyond team and NSE identified the equipment/ appliances on site which uses the most energy. The exact measurement also ensures accurate calculations of projected savings. This ensure the focus is kept on the implementation of financially attractive technologies.

Financial attractiveness is further improved as certain technologies are eligible for an Eskom rebate, which can be as high as 50% of the capex under certain conditions. For this reason, &Beyond decided to change all the lights at their Mountain & Rock Lodge camps to LED equivalents and earned a 35% Eskom rebate in the process. The group is closely monitoring the actual savings earned. The performance of the new technology has been very good suggesting &Beyond are more open to larger (and more beneficial) investments in green technologies.

There was no impact on the lodge operations during installation, and all was completed within the budget and time frame. Overall, the process was above our expectation and was backed up by specialists in each area of the process.
