Load shedding

Submitted by: Jaco Viljoen

{PP}There are many theories going around about why load shedding is happening.

Mainly negative views: The guys at the top don’t know what they are doing. Bad planning. ”Heads need to roll!” I am an optimist and choose to believe this one: Our countries economy is growing at such an alarming rate that eskom can’t upgrade fast enough.

I for one hate not being able to make a cup of coffee. But let’s be realistic. Load shedding has a more serious impact on business and the economy(businesses close and jobs will be lost.) This will affect YOU! Directly or indirectly.

On a lighter note. I have been doing some research and came up with 17 things you can do to save energy.

1) Change all globes to Compact Fluorescent Globes.

2) Switch off lights and appliances that aren’t being used.

3) If you are fortunate enough to be able to convert to gas water heating and a gas stove please do so.

4) Don’t waste water!!! Why?? To clean water costs money and uses lots of electricity.

5) Decide what you want from the fridge before opening the door. Leaving the door open lets cold air escape and causes the fridge to work harder and use more electricity.

6) If you are using an air conditioner close all doors and windows to the room or office.

7) If you leave an outside light on for security reasons I suggest using a day-night switch globe. It turns off automatically when the sun comes up. So when you sleep late on Saturday the lights don’t stay on until noon.

8) Read a book.(This way the TV can be left off a little longer)

9) Don’t fill the kettle to make 1 cup of coffee. • 1 cup of coffee = 1.5 cups of water • 2 cups of coffee = 2.5 cups of water • 3 cups of coffee = 3.5 cups of water etc…

10) Lower the temperature of your geyser to around 55°C so you need to add less cold water when having a bath or washing dishes.

11) Keep the lids on your pots when cooking to keep the heat from escaping and helping your cook faster.

12) In winter rather heat your bed and not your room.

13) If you have to use a heater use a medium or low setting.

14) Do you washing with cold water. Your clothes won’t fade as quickly too.

15) Use your dishwasher only when it’s full.

16) Skip the pre-wash setting on your washing machine.

17) Isolate your geyser with a blanket or newspapers. We can beat the energy crisis save money

And save the planet, by following these tips.
