Cleaner Fuels for Robin Subaru Engines South Africa
Submitted by: e-spectations.com [Pressportal.co.za] Engines require a certain level of octane in order to prevent "pinging" or "knocking." Uncontrolled detonation of the last part of the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber cause engine knocking and may damage the engine. Lead was traditionally added to petrol in order to increase the octane level. The higher the octane level, the higher the rating, the less will be the tendency of a fuel to cause knock.
On 3 March 2005 Cabinet approved cleaner fuels for South Africa effective 1 January 2006. Implementation of this legislation will result in termination of lead being added to petrol and lower Sulphur standards for diesel. This decision by Cabinet is part of the process, which will contribute to improvement of urban air quality through the introduction of newly formulated fuels. Justin Kitson, Engines division Manager at Goscor stated the following: "Goscor engines would like to inform all Robin Subaru Engine users that our engines could use either Unleaded or LRP petrol. We recommend that users choose the grade of petrol (unleaded (ULP) or Lead Replacement petrol (LRP) they prefer and stick with it. The grade of petrol users choose will depend on the altitude above sea level. If, for some reason you do need to change, we request that the engine be submitted to the nearest service center in order to have it de-coked (also known as decarbonizing). This is a simple procedure requiring the mechanic to remove the cylinder head, remove all the carbon from the chamber to back lap the valves. This will ensure that all Robin Subaru Engines continue to perform at its peak performance giving users hours of hassle free operation. " Kitson assured all Robin Subaru engine users that existing warranties, will stay in tact providing peace of mind to the engine owner. Robin Subaru engine owners and the media are invited to visit the Engines and forestry web site for details of the different grades of petrol to be used at different altitudes.
