CleanCitySA launches a civil society campaign to keep Johannesburg from getting trashed.

We are pleased to announce that CleanCitySA, a registered non-profit company, has launched a civil society campaign to unite the citizens of Johannesburg in working towards a common goal of restoring the City to its former glory.

The campaign has been launched through all CleanCitySA electronic platforms today.  We believe that by cleaning up the Johannesburg inner city, one street at a time, and educating citizens about the implications of litter to human health, safety, welfare and the environment, we can make this dream a reality.

With the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, cleaner environments where we live, work and play, have become an imperative for humanity, post the national lockdown period. We acknowledge that in the past, many businesses moved out of the inner city to the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, residential accommodation was left unoccupied, many people moved to other parts of the city.

This resulted in abandoned buildings, deterioration of the infrastructure, poor provision of services, and a decline in the economic activity in the city. Our city has languished in urban decay for over 3 decades, the increase in the number of people living in the inner city and immigration over the years, and the increase in litter on the streets, parks, open spaces, transport hubs such as taxi ranks, has been some of many contributing factors to this decline.

Now is the time for the citizens of Johannesburg to play a part, in changing the present environment that is full of litter, to a cleaner economic hub of South Africa, and an urban lifestyle city, a city that exudes a rich history and culture we can all be proud to call home. CleanCitySA invites partners, sponsors and volunteers to participate in its Adopt a Street™ civil society campaign to keep Johannesburg from getting trashed.  Adopt a Street™ is a cleaning up campaign which is based on the premise that your immediate environment where you live, work and play matters the most.

Businesses Adopt a Street™ where they operate, citizens Adopt a Street™ where they live and play, including open spaces and parks. We believe that the environment where we live, work and play must be protected and preserved for the sustainability of future generations to come. The Adopt a Street™ campaign will contribute towards reducing clogged drains, polluted rivers and the ocean, chemical contamination, fire hazards, litter, grime, filth in our streets and open spaces.

The Adopt a Street™ campaign will further contribute towards safer communities, increased tourism and economic growth in our city. CleanCitySA invites partners to provide the Adopt a Street™ campaign with expertise, equipment and the know-how to carry out cleaning up operations. CleanCitySA invites sponsors to support the Adopt a Street™ campaign with dedicated #CleanCityCrews, and to educate citizens about the implication of litter to human health, safety, welfare and the environment.

CleanCitySA invites volunteers participate in the Adopt a Street™ cleanup events every Saturday morning from 9am to 11am. CleanCitySA will continue to engage with all sectors of society, communities, business, government, other civil society organisations, to keep Johannesburg from getting trashed. For more information, we invite everyone to visit our website – www.cleancity.org.za or follow us on Twitter - @CleanCitySA1 END
