Johannesburg, 2 February 2019 - The Institute of Internal Auditors SA (IIASA) will host its annual Public Sector Forum at Emperors Palace from 4 to 5 February.

The theme for this year’s event - which will be attended by public sector internal auditors and audit committee members - is “Poised for the Future”.A host of internal audit executives, academics, political analysts, senior civil servants from various government departments as well as executives from state-owned entities such as Telkom feature on the programme.

Several key topics presently enveloping South Africa will be explored with the opening session being hosted by Vice Chancellor of the University of the Free State, Professor Jonathan Jansen, whole will talk about leadership and integrity. He will be followed by the Acting Accountant-General, Zanele Mxunyelwa, who will speak about the future of the internal audit profession in times of change.

Other speakers include:* IIASA CEO, Dr. Claudelle von Eck, who will talk on “Building Ethical intelligence and Ethical Courage”;* CEO of Kingdom Investment Holdings, Tau Oliphant, who will speak about “The Auditing Culture and Ethics”: and,* Political analyst, Justice Malala, who will speak about the “Age of Turbulence”.And, as the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture leaves the nation riveted with almost hourly revelations, the topic will also be explored at the forum.

Specifically, the role of internal audit in the myriad revelations will be examined.

In addition, data analytics will also be discussed and, specifically, how it is poised to unlock the full potential of internal audit.

Other topics include innovative leadership within a bureaucracy, auditing culture and ethics, the role of the public sector in growing the economy, a panel discussion on lifestyle audits being a “necessary evil” as well as its “pros and cons”.The CEO of the IIASA, Dr. Claudelle von Eck, said the past two years have been tumultuous both for the country as well as the audit profession.

“We thus have a duty and obligation to all citizens as well as our 8 000-strong members, from both the private and public sectors, to address state capture, unethical leadership, corruption and poor service delivery.”She added: “These all have a severe impact on economic growth and what is needed now is frank discussions on how we turn things around.”

Von Eck said the range of topics and discussions would better inform members as to the very real impact the sector has on curtailing unemployment, improving service delivery, ensuring fiscal discipline as well as promoting ethical leadership and closing the gap between rich and poor.
